Re: Brave Wilderness
Some nice footage in this video by ViralHog from Germany. European hornets hunting wasps gathering around some sugar water & has some excellent close up camera work & cinematography that gets in close to the action. The stuff of nightmares for many a picnic goer. Jam sandwich & glass of lemonade anyone? chuckle

The tarantula hawk.

Love my tarantula hawks, I have them here all summer- red ones, orange ones, blue and green ones too. Only been stung once because I was annoying it repeatedly and it finally got tired of my crap and nailed me. 1rof1 I had that one coming so it's all good.

How painful did it feel Shiva ascendant? I have only been stung by a common wasp & a bumblebee. The bumblebee stung me behind my ear & had quite a kick to it. I was around 8 year old at the time.
I was stung in between the toes by a wasp multible times before i knew what was happening. I thought it was a bit of thistle stuck between my toes & reached down to move it & got stung on the finger as well. chuckle
 Quoting: Fraust66

Cutting off my finger might have been less painful, I considered it too. rockon One hell of a welt on my finger tip.

So it was that bad. The cliche I heard about describing the tarantula hawk sting was it was like stepping onto a glowing red hot rusty nail & it sticking through your foot. I can't imagine how painful it was for you to contemplate cutting off your finger to take away the pain. The tarantula hawk I assume would take a fair bit of angering before it would sting though if i have it right. It would avoid rather than sting then?
I'm glad I don't live in Japan this next video shows a European bee colony hive under attack from the giant hornets.

They seem to be slow to anger and as I said I'd been harassing it A LOT and following it around for a while to do so. I love the way they shimmer in the sun, they are as beautiful as hummingbirds to me.

I'm not sure if you are familiar with the Fallout New Vegas computer game but one of the toughest enemies in the game was called a Cazador. These were basically giant tarantula hawks. Here is a real life showdown of a Tarantula Hawk Wasp VS Desert Tarantula. I see what you mean about the colors on the tarantula hawk & how vivid its chitin would look in bright sunlight. cheers

Got bit a few weeks ago by a brown furry spidey. Bit me twice. Skin is still discolored and looks sorta dead around the wounds. Itched like crazy for days.

I'm sure that in the height of summer it would be a nightmare if you didn't have this spray where you live ET SF <3. Over here in Belfast the
worst we would get is yellow jackets especially after a mild winter although I live on the eastern edge of the city close to farmland & got bitten
by a horse fly or clegg when I was turning compost. It was quite a thump when it bit me on the forearm & painful for a day or two after.
