Did you have forest fire problems this summer?

In FRance they do, or did, use a special type of wood chipper to manage the forest in the Pyrenees. I read the book a long time ago, but from what I recall, brush was collected from around human habitation sites, chipped with this unique chipper and used to heat schools and other civic buildings.

ANyhow...there are way better forestry management countries then the US and Canada. I heard a debate between a firefighter in BC, and one from New Zealand. In NZ it seems, you are responsible for your home (same goes with Australia) and if you live in a fire prone area you tend to have a water source you can pump from to protect your home by yourself.

But that's from my faulty memory.

years ago I traveled from Karigasniemi down to Helsinki and I remember the vast and quite clean forests of pine I saw..

this makes sense.

I would take our northern neighbors Finns seriously, they practically live - the forests up in their arse - and they are very good at managing forests, because forest density is quite high in Finland.

We also have now quite controlled regulations how forests are maintained, harvested, timber cut and remaining debry cleaned after that.

Although our colder climates differ from Califirnia, the core principles of forest maintenance should be similar everywhere.

Germany's forests are tended by special Foresters. They are highly regarded people in Germany. The forests are kept clear of brush. Germany is/was beautiful.

so not areas of just regular forest that have not been logged

the rest of the forest no one ever rakes, and forests have existed LOOOOONG before humans and guess what were just fine with no one raking them

No link, but 20 years ago I heard CA wildfires rage because extremist environmental laws forbid thinning out brush and undergrowth. Locals don't dare touch a plant or risk severe fines.

Is this common knowledge? I've only visited CA, never lived there.

In Mass. when I was growing up in the 60's bulldozers would sweep through the miles and miles of fire breaks that weaved through the deep woods every now and then. Now there are no firebreaks. Overgrown woods as a relic of a people that used to think about preventative measures.

Well, he had a series on the forest fires and especially Paradise, and he has some footage from the forests, how normally dead trunks lie around nowadays. He had a few things to say about how the forests are managed or not managed.

Well, and that's true - but they have also DONE so by having MASSIVE fires occasionally to thin out underbrush etc. Additionally, manmade clearcutting without proper clearing and rehab is causing FAR worse conditions, as well as the fact that (at least in Northern BC) we've brought non-natice species. Forests ravaged by the Pine beetle should be bulldozed or controlled burnt, because there's just NO access and 2 - 3 feet of dry combustible material EVERYWHERE. If that were properly cleared, you could actually ACCESS and CONTROL many fires that currently can't be contained.

I can definitely see where thiss idea of "raking" makes a ton of sense. However, there's a lot less of Finland to rake too, and try to convince any North American gov't to pony up the funds and make jobs? Never happen.

If we can quit splitting the shell up to give the earth more room to expand then maybe we can go back to using stuff lying around on the surface for fuel.
Ignoring the geothermal potential of yellowstone while we spread tar all over the place has looked weird, but I guess it's a matter of getting things in the right order.

That video from Paradise showed enormous amounts of trees within the town... and of course dry bushes catch fire, there was a comment in the video.
