Rules Will make Truck driving a pointless career move for Young Men.
You will only get 20 good years of driving before you need to reeducate yourself. This means you would need 70-100 an hr to be prepared for your failing health.

Once you hit 35 and your blood pressure hits either number over 140/90 you can kiss it good bye.

Better to get a trade skill and never go into transportation.

I'm taking the time to tell young guys/gals before they spend tons of money on college and truck driving schools.

These new rules make it a pointless career at current wages.

If you spend money on a certified driving school before entering the field then you probably need to make 300k a year for the next 20 years.
You will never make that much money.
Most jobs only want to pay 50-60k a year.....

Let the transportation system fail and spend your money wisely for education.

Truck driving will soon become automated due to AI. They haven't worked out all the bugs yet but within 15 years time you will see many truck drivers being replaced with AI unless something happens to stop it.

There is going to be an awful lot of unemployment due to AI automation. Technology is doing away with more jobs then it's creating and the jobs it's creating requires a higher level of education and training which is something crappy public schools are doing a poor job of preparing students to enter STEM majors. Most public schools do a crap job of teaching the basics like Math and English so many students do not have a solid foundation to take something like Engineering at University and be successful at it.

AI can't drive 18 wheelers unless they have their own track. Like trains. Lawsuits over accidents would put companies out of business.

Nevermind truck driving, you need a DOT card for a F350 pickup truck or a F150 if it's towing a trailer... they are really stepping up the enforcement of that too.

If you cross state lines in a F350 pickup truck for business purposes you are supposed to be keeping drivers logs like a fucking 18 wheeler, which now includes having a GPS tracking device in your vehicle at all times which records your hours of service which can be reviewed by the DOT at ANY time.

Doctor said you get 1 year , then after that if either number is still high it goes to a 3 month certification.Truck driving is a very unhealthy job and it doesn't pay enough to waste the time from the start.A young man or woman should find a better career choice.Wish I had.

You really can't do that... the DOT can stop commercial vehicles at any time for any reason, and there's weigh stations which you'll eventually have to pull into.

What they will do is use a never ending stream of non-English speaking immigrants who have low blood pressure since they just hiked here from Honduras, which... in the end will lead to more accidents.

It's already happening, nobody wants to drive trucks anymore because of the regulations and DOT harassment but immigrants have no problem doing it because the cops give them a pass due to the language barrier and it's better than living in Guatemala.

The one thing it IS good for is making contacts at a LOT of places. If you're a good driver, helpful and polite, you can make a LOT of inroads with businesses.

When I ran a S&R department, and then a heavy truck warehouse, I had a LOT of drivers that came looking for work later on, or references, as they felt that they'd "aged out." Gave good references to many and even got a few hired.

Do what you can until you can't, and then adapt.

Myself? Dozens and dozens. Forestry, mining, long haul, short haul... maybe hundreds over the years.

I was JUST saying to my wife how sad it is that A) almost all the trucks you see anymore in BC are Western Star... nothing against them, but I hate a monopoly.. and that B) Custom trucks with names and art... sadly, lost to the past as well.

Well maybe the people who don't know how to eat half decent and get a bit of exercise and have 140/90 bp at 35 should be suspended. It's not that hard.

In Texas, it is 2 year, 1 year or 6 months certification, but doctors usually work with you.

Some Docs will allow people the lay there and rest until they get a low enough reading on your BP to meet the minimum standards.

And what about the larger than 17 inch neck thing?

I know very few drivers that were actually documented as such even though they clearly exceeded it.
