I know you are, and I haven't taken offense to anything you have said. This was a shit situation all around, and I didn't have the luxury of second guessing myself in the moment, so I am trying really hard not to now.

OP, is it possible any of your kids have mentioned to friends that you have some nice firearms? Perhaps that is what they were targeting.

My nephew's friends found out his step-dad had quite a nice collection and targeted his house. They got away with a nice handgun.

The older boys are twelve and ten, so if they did, the kid told an older sibling or something - it definitely wasn't a child coming in. The girls are actually both very guarded with that kind of stuff and most likely wouldn't ever mention it. Plus, they think I'm silly for putting such an emphasis in life on self defense and SHTF preps. Maybe not now, but previously at least lol.

I sincerely hope that's all it is, because the alternative is pretty scary.

now had they been armed and continued to enter your home you would have had no choice but to shoot, that is protecting your domain. but to kill just because you can is a lot different than killing in defense.

i think alot of kids broke into houses a few times growing up.

sometimes it's a stupid kid trying out as kind of adrenaline rush of and maybe doesn't deserve to die just get scared.

knew a few kids who did it not to steal just for the thrill of it mostly.

You did the right thing OP. If we didn't care and weren't humane, you could make the argument that if people got shot when they broke into houses, and it was a virtual certainty, then I'll bet most of the break-ins would stop. That's the long term view and that would be good generally. But who wants to kill enough people to teach that lesson? Not me I assure you. I would if I had to, but ONLY if I had to.

This is the dilemma. If you went to jail for 10 years for speeding no matter what, I'll bet people wouldn't speed. But would you feel right locking someone up for 10 years (and costing the government so much money to do so) for someone going 57 in a 55?

No easy answers but again, I think you did the right thing.

Many years ago I was awakened by my wife in an out of state hotel room to find someone in room after we left the key (a real key - before the days of cards and mag strips) in the door when we were done with a wedding and two tired kids.

I just stood up and made a barrier between him and the family and said 'leave'. He did. He got my wife's make-up compact maybe thinking it was travel jewelry box.

They key thing was the treat was gone and away from the family. That is what was important.
