Op, you had him, but he won't change because there was no consequence.

Why didn't you let him come inside then make him tie himself up with zip ties? Then call the police and let them arrest him for burglary?

Then he would have gone to jail and had consequences.

Now he is just laughing about it and will rob someone else, and when he is caught he won't have the record of being caught at your house.

I wouldn't put much into what most people say or think, but trash like this guy really needs jail time, not someone drinking a beer on his own front porch, or lawnmower in his own yard. This person deserved jail!

Food for thought the next time it happens, because he got off lightly at your house.

I don't think you should have killed him, but he should have gone to jail!

Killing someone is a permanent solution to a temporary problem, he just needs to learn a lesson. And taking someone's life has a toll on your own soul!

Dude, do you know how many things can go wrong if your not trained to subdue and restrain an attacker?
OP did the right thing , period.

That involved putting my family in much more danger than I was willing to put them through. Had I been home alone, possibly.

I would have ended his life twice without even thinking about it before doing that.

I understand, i would have gone outside to get him, leaving your family to call 911.

I absolutely wanted to, but I wasn't sure if there were more, and if they were inside of my house (why I didn't send my wife out of the room to begin with), so I wanted to check on my kids first. I knew they would be long gone by the time I got out there, but that seemed like the priority in the moment.

I'm with you though man. I despise the thought of him doing this again because he was given the chance.

I've been trying to process all of this, and haven't felt like listening to the barrage of "pussy" and "should have killed him" from keyboard warriors while doing so, but whatever, here it is:

TL;DR version: Someone was breaking into my house and I helped them evacuate their bowels with the help of my handgun instead of giving them a lead tuneup.

It's 2am, and I literally just got up from playing a video game with my nephew on ps4. I heard a noise on the other side of the house, so I went to go check on it. I wrote it off as my turtle rearranging his shit and went into my bedroom where my wife was sleeping when I heard something at my window. It didn't take but five seconds or so for it to be clear this was someone taking the screen out.

I grabbed the only gun I don't keep in a safe (five children) and woke my wife up. I told her to get on the floor between the bed and dresser, took a defensive position a couple of feet behind the window, and focused on controlling my breath. I wasn't breathing heavily, I just knew I was about to have to pull the trigger and wanted to get it right. The screen was out now and the window was creaking, so my mind was instantly made up; I'm shooting. I have to shoot.

I thought about telling the guy I was there to begin with, but I didn't want to give up the huge advantage I had, plus, I live in FL; this would without a doubt be a textbook Castle Doctrine case. As I'm waiting, my wife is begging me to make sure it's not one of the kids. I knew it wasn't because I had just checked the house for the previous noise, but for some reason, it made me decide to announce that I was there, inches away and about to rush deliver him to the consequences of the worst decision he had made in his life.

I shouted, "I'M ABOUT TO PUT SOME BIG HOLES IN YOU, MOTHERFUCKER!!!' and he shouted back that he was "Very sorry" slammed my window back shut from the foot or so he had it opened, and ran away between houses. I turned the flashlight on my Sig, and ran through my house checking the rooms, and then around the outside of my house while my wife dialed 911. Once outside, I realized that he had taken out three screens looking for an unlocked window, and mine was the only one he found.

Now that it is over, and I have had a few days to process it, here is where my head is at:

Words can't begin to describe how happy I am that I was armed and prepared for the situation, but I am even happier that I didn't have to take a life. If you come into my house at two in the morning, you will die, and had I caught him legit inside my house he would have, but I almost missed the chance to stop him BEFORE that happened.

Of the thousand things running through my mind since, this is the one that is there the most.

What are your thoughts GLP? Did I fuck up? Am I a pussy?
I wasn't scared to shoot him, in fact, if not for my wife I most likely would have. I'm glad I didn't though.

You would have absolutely been in the right to take the prowler’s life.....
That being said, you absolutely did the right thing. I think that you decided to make a stand against this prowler, however I also think that you made the subconscious decision to give the family or friends inside your house more of a chance to avoid a dangerous situation (you protected them, they didn’t have a weapon to give them a chance) and by making that announcement you might just have forced a desperate drug addicted criminal that would do anything for a fix into someone that might think about the consequences of their actions , realizing that they have a way bigger addiction than they thought..... you may have been prepared to take a life my friend, but you did everything in your power to avoid it.....Count it as a Win for Good, a win that wasn’t overshadowed by self doubt and a bunch of other things while questioning if you could have done it differently.

A lot of times we get wrapped up in the fact that we can do things, and fail to see that Just because we can; doesn’t mean that we necessarily should

Glad it all worked out.....Keep an eye out for anything that doesn’t feel right in a space that you know and keep your family safe, never know if he’s not a fast learner and might come back. Also remind kids and wives to keep exterior doors and windows locked and if the windows are open use track lock devices. If you don’t have a dog......this is a good reason to get one
As an alarm, they notice subtle things that we don’t notice even when paying attention. Also you cut your burglary chances by roughly 70% when you have a dog ! For the same reason bad guys don’t like K-9 units, they almost always say shoot me, but NOBODY says “oh, don’t shoot bro send the dog...”.

Guys, this helps more than you know. While I know I am happy I didn't have to shoot, I am going back and forth on wether I did the right thing. Seeing my feelings confirmed feels like I have one less thing to be concerned with right now, which is huge when you have a thousand things going through your mind and you are trying to prioritize them.

I won't judge wrong or right, or say that you should have done anything differently, as everybody will respond differently in tense situations such as this.

What I will say is that if you park in the driveway all the time, it is very easy for anyone to be able to tell if you are home or not, if they are watching.

Also, now he knows you have guns in the house, and that is one of the major targets in any burglary, so I hope you have a good home security system/cameras/etc., as I'm sure at some point, he and/or his friends will be back, only this time, they'll likely watch to make sure their plans aren't interrupted by an armed homeowner.

This is why I keep my garage clean enough to park both vehicles inside it, and have cameras inside and out.

Good to know. I would recommend getting some Arlo cameras from Best Buy. Very affordable, connects to your phone. Once installed no monthly fees or costs. Records everything up to seven days for free. Would have been very useful as identifying the perp and as evidence.

Good luck and God bless, OP.

Wow, good job OP.

I wonder if he knew people were home? Could he see through the windows to see your wife asleep?

Wonder what his intent was and if he was also armed.
 Quoting: Saint Kitty

Both vehicles were in the driveway. I drive a big ass Ram 2500, so they not only knew there were people home, they knew there was a guy home. Wondering their intent is whats sticking with me currently.

Luckily, Florida defines their intent in legal terms in case I had to shoot, but that doesn't help me from wondering.

2am with both vehicles sounds more rapey and violent of an intrusion than coming in while we are at work and stealing shit.

idk...
 Quoting: GTB

I completely agree about having bad intentions, and that's why I asked. Very ballsy of him (or them).

I wonder if there was more than one person too.

Maybe you need to get some security cameras and window alarms if you need to sleep better at night.

I rarely reply to anything here, but felt compelled in this case. Texas resident here. We a have "castle doctrine" as well. Why other states haven't passed this law I will never know. Truth be told, I don't even understand why we even have to HAVE a law....this should be "common law", in every state.

You absolutely did the right thing. Good on you. What I have come to the conclusion, just for my own moral standing with the Lord, if I was ever in a situation like that, whether at home, in my car, or in public somewhere, I would tell the perp something along the lines of "I am armed and in fear of my life." This gives them the chance to come to their senses and back off.

If they don't listen and press the issue, "...click...bang...thud..."

Glad you and your family are alive and safe. Hopefully this encounter taught a lesson to the "could've been dead guy".

I wasn't scared to shoot him, in fact, if not for my wife I most likely would have. I'm glad I didn't though.

Im not sure I wpouldnt of shot him cold , but It seems that npo matter if we have these laews on the books the f*cking pigs will styill try and twisty it, distort it and then the proicuter will puick up the case and tear through your life looking for the smallest reason to charge you with murder and then the scumbag piece of crap family would try and sue you and then you have to fight all of these legal cases and its just a big hassle.

Now if it would of been me, I would of made my way outside super quiet, this makes sure its not onre of the kids, and you have the opertunity to catch the scumbag outside red handed with a gun to their head, then they couldnt of run away.
then the real fun would of started, I would of marched them into my garage at gun point and had my way with them, made sure that the next time they even had a thought of breaking and entering it would make them shit their pants remebering the last time.
Who they gona call!? the police, and tell them what, that they where breaking into your house to rob or even worse, yeah I dont think they will be calling anyone, so I would have them in my garage and it would of been some resivoire Dogs up in there, some Jokers to the left of me type sceme, Oh man I would of spent the whole night changing that scumbag, but thats just me.

but glad your ok and everything worked out like you wouold of wanted it to.

Re: Caught someone breaking into my house Wednesday night - Crazy shit
I think you did the right thing. Who can know for sure.

Not long ago- in the daytime- my husband was in his shop at the far end of our backyard. I was inside vacuuming. When my husband came out of the shop he saw a guy taking the screen off a bedroom window. My husband walked nearer and said, What the hell are you doing. The guy ignored him. My husband came in to get a gun and told me to call the police and stay in the house. When he went back outside the guy was sitting on the ground. My husband told him the police were on their way. He stood up, walked a few feet and sat on a trailer. My husband asked him at this point- Are you sick? No answer. Then the guy fell over and started having a seizure. My husband called 9-11, asked for an ambulance and cancelled police. My husband knew one of the paramedics who later told us the guy had a diabetic episode combined with a heat stroke.
If it had been dark with both of us in the house and he had been taking off that screen, he would most likely have been shot.

You and your family got out alive, that's all that matters.

I have guns, but it would be a mess to use any. Scaring away someone with the sound of my shotgun action racking a round into the chamber is good enough of a deterrent for most.

But you never know if they're armed or not.

I had a home invasion burglary at 2AM. They were gone out the window with my wallet that was laying in the other room before I got my gun. I would have shot them if I saw them there.

Great news. Nothing to get the adrenals active again like a break-in a 2AM.

BTW OP, where do you live? Rural? State? How long do the police usually take to respond?

Thanks! I live in the suburbs in what is almost South Florida (some consider it SF). Not a bad neighborhood by any standard. It took the police about five minutes to get there I'd say, but it's hard to tell now.

The police were awesome though. The only question I was asked about my firearm was from the 911 operator. I told him to tell the police they may find a shirtless man with a gun and flashlight in the yard, and not to shoot his dumb ass. He asked what kind of gun, and I told him a handgun.

Nothing else was even asked about it other than describing what I did. Very 2A minded department.

Certainly something I have considered at great lengths. I pray I did the right thing and that doesn't happen.

Killing him, even in Florida is costly.
First there’s the mess to clean up, which is costly.
Then there’s lawyers, even with stand your ground you will probably need civil defense from the lawsuit the relatives will bring.
Then you need to watch your back, especially if he had a criminal brother who wants pay back.

What your did is cheaper and he won’t be back.

Hello fellow Floridian! I'm in northeast Florida. Also very safe area but at times the usual trash comes around looking for trouble here. My wife and I both have CCW and I keep a hot 9mm and 12ga in the bedroom. Our oldest daughter knows how to handle business as well despite not even being a teenager yet. It's the world in which we live.
