"1 count of administering amoxicillin to Big Momma, 1 count of administering Tramadol to Big Momma, 3 counts of administering amoxicillin to a white Siamese cat, 3 counts of administering a topical antibiotic ointment (triple antibiotic from Dollar Tree) to a white Siamese cat, 3 counts of administering amoxicillin to a cat known as Sweet Pea, 1 count of administering amoxicillin to an unnamed black kitten, and 1 count of solicitation to commit a crime," the non-profit writes.

"It was all over-the-counter stuff you could literally find at Dollar Tree," said Raina Nyliram, 24, an animal rescue volunteer who started a crowdfunding campaign for Hedges to help cover legal fees. "She couldn’t get the animals to the vet because the vet was closed. All the charges are bogus."


Other than the Tramadol, these charges are bullshit.

I couldn't let pets or livestock die without trying to help either.

Will I go to jail for giving tianeptine to an injured turtle?

Police have nothing better to do during this than harrass good samaritans?

Well that is pretty much insane. If the owners drop off their pets then there should be some common idea of a "shelter" for them. Permit or not.


As for the meds. Sometimes situations get to the point where you as an owner (or someone in charge of the welfare of those pets need to make a decision, for the good of the animal). I've had a dog (with other medical conditions react badly to antibiotics) but its so rare that in an emergency situation it shouldn't really be taken into account.

Vets trust owners to practically BE vets. Everything from bandaging wounds and taking care of sprains and infections in horses. To a seizing diabetic dog (is it a seizure, low blood sugar? try getting a blood test on your own with a dog that is seizing). Or giving under the skin IV's to a cat with kidney problems. I never had training but I could adjust the dog's insulin level better than the vet could. It got to the point I was contacting the vet to tell them numbers and what I changed (to keep the record correct). My dog lived for years, I had to eventually put her down because of cancer. Never had any proper "training".

As far as I'm concerned those owners released their pets to someone who was going to take care of them. That person did their best to take care of them (in a situation where they would have died without that person) and they were arrested for it. wtf?

The only other thing I could see that person doing was to consult over the phone with a vet before administrating medication. But most vets likely would not give that advice over the phone, in any situation. Never mind that this situation was an emergency and they could not be brought to ANY vet.

A decent Jury will never convict her.

Yes thats why small congregations doing for thier own and what they can don't put up signs or advertise. They just pray every day and keep carrying on. Don't get much help but grateful for the help they get, don't get as much harm and shove around either.
If she could have quoted a vet, they couldn't charge her and these charges are bogus just to intimidate others.



What does that even mean? We dont need tv permits here. We could print them when someone does the plans...

I disagree here. She was NOT a licensed Vet. She self medicated them without a vet's approval or prescription. Since it appears that the need for the medication was not life threatening, I would have charged her too. She should have stuck to just rescuing and feeding the animals and waited or found a vet.

I disagree with your disagreement. Seems the majority of meds were antibiotics, you know what they are used for, right? A few sick animals can infect a lot of animals, especially if housed in close quarters. She made a judgement call to err on the side of safety.

Would you withhold treatment for a sick pet, during a natural disaster, while isolated AND having the exact medication required to heal or ease said pets ailment?

What if it was your pet or livestock. I bet any owners who really cared about the animal would be grateful to this lady.

So true that pets families can know more than a vet. I diagnosed my dogs adenovirus and I dose her potassium and sodium based on how her heart sounds. The er vet just prescribed her a beta blocker without even checking electrolytes.

By the way, I've found that many viruses mess up sodium and/or potassium, in humans and pets alike. And if you give one, you also have to give some of the other or you will create an imbalance, something else her vet didn't warn me about. He only prescribed potassium which is why I had to figure things out myself.

The pet owners willfully relinquished their pets to die in a hurricane, so the owners should no longer have ownership of the animals.
The rescuer should have full ownership of the animals as he medicated them.
