Yes, a great question as an observatory kind of needs scientists who know what they are looking at.

The Sunspot telescope looks strange. Its vertical with what looks like a ball on the top. Could that be a mirror?

Would make sense, give a 360 view.

Could that mirror point horizontal and how far would it see?

Astro, can you shed some light on how these telescopes work and what is there purpose?

The reason I cannot hold espionage as a creditable threat is that the Sacramento mountain range that the observatory sits on,(of which it is on the southern point) has many areas for viewing White Sands and Holloman AFB from the drive. These two places are just to the west of the highway down in the Tularosa Basin and you can literally see from observation areas along hwy 131 all of Tularosa Basin. Plus there are homes that are less conspicuous on the drive down High Rolls area. It just doesn't make sense that there would be spy equipment at this facility given all the other inconspicuous places for them to be. Just my take on knowing the area.

I assume you're referring to the Dunn Solar Telescope? Yes, there's a mirror at the top of the telescope. It uses a heliostat to track the sun and direct the light down the shaft. Here's a diagram:

Don't know anything about this man, just know that his reporting is screwy to say the least, kind of feels like a cover up.The facts do not match what his video is potraying.

Despite current news, still no rationale re what workers were doing to antennas & towers if the threat was a disgruntled worker. Things that make you go hmmm? Besides why not just arrest the person instead of closing down the town?

So, a quick update. Went back to Sunspot this evening. It was after seeing that they were supposed to open it yesterday and they had new posts on social media page.I didn't get there in time to see if the visitors center was open. Drove right in, no more tape. BUT, there are no residents there. Residential street was blocked with cones, but houses were clearly empty. Time was 8:30 pm and there were no lights coming from the houses, none at all.
The mystery continue. Where are the residents? And it was still empty of people at the observatory sites. No one. You would think that since this made International news that they would at least have a guard at the property. I saw no one except another vehicle drove up, probably doing just what did, to see if anyone was home.

Yeah .. very strange. Still..
