Re: My Dog Passed Away Today
after going through 4 pups all living 12-14 years, i know the answer will be to get another one. if not right now, but surely with 1-2 months.

because after you get a new one, you never forget about the one/s youve lost, but you start to feel bad for the one you have and its like the new one says to you...

"...hey buddy, im your new buddy now, and i cannot replace your old one, but lets be friends and learn about one antoher and make the best of it...all i can say is that i will love you and be as loyal to you as your old buddy...so what do ya say, eh?....give me some time and i assure you that i will grow on you and in time, you will love me just the same as i will love you...."hf

Re: My Dog Passed Away Today

My last dog was a 100lbs fat pudgy ass Full Blooded Norwegian Elk Hound you would never expect to be out of shape like that (despite our wildest pumpkin diet efforts) or as loyal as he was. He took his dying breath at 18 years old, the Vet had long since given up telling us to put his ass on a diet, crawling over to the feet of my then 9yr old daughters room to check on her one last time. And I watched it happen and had to go in there find a reason to pick her up distract and remove her from the room so I could tell her what had happened and I’ll be damned I watched that dog do just that. You couldn’t leave doors closed with him he’d whine all night at the door wanting to check on everyone. That was one hell of a dog to me and you know the best ones are usually not much to look at and never what you would expect. You know ? Hang in there OP. And take as long as you need to get ok with this but then go rescue another :). It’s not replacing a dog. It’s saving another dog. :).

What an amazing dog you had. Eighteen years, wow! Reading this brought tears to my eyes with memories of my crazy, lovable Weimaraner, Hans. He would whine at a closed door - or closed shower curtain. It wasn't because he wanted to make sure we were okay, he was just incredibly needy and child like, spoiled and didn't want to be alone.

I loved his goofy ass more than any other living creature. We had the most exciting adventures together. He traveled coast to coast with me several times and down the Oregon and California Coast several times as well. He loved hotel rooms, jumping from bed to bed like a maniac, one time with surgical bandages still on his knee following his second patella surgery. (Keeping a hyper hound dog still is next to impossible) I swear I had more than a college education invested into that poorly bred dog, but, would have done anything that needed to be done to keep him healthy and happy. Acupuncture, homeopathy - you name it.

He hated going to the vet. He would put the brakes on in the parking lot and I had to practically drag him in. When his life was fading and he could no longer manage to walk without pain and he lost interest in food, his tail no longer wagged and his eyes dimmed I chose to have the vet come to my home. He died peacefully in my arms surrounded by the people he loved most in this world. I know this sounds crazy but a friend who was an animal communicator was here. She relayed so many of his memories - he thanked me for hiring a man to cut and clean up the lawn in California which was 5 years prior to his death in Michigan. Apparently, it meant a lot to him and I know I didn't do a good enough job.

I truly believe he returned to me in the very healthy, vibrant body of a pit bull who has all the same weird quirks that Hans had. He even answers to the name when I ask - are you Hans? Very weird coincidences in their behavior, including the closed shower curtain issue. That's another story. Much love to all who have lost their four legged friends - they aren't just animals to "own", they are souls sent here to love us. You know - DOG / GOD!

I burried my little dog in the back of my yard. He will always be close. This is not easy to cope with. A pain inside that is hard to describe. I put a cross where I burried him. I go outside and I see everyone walking their dogs and that was me as well. And now I can't. It's a loneliness that tears you up inside.

It's been 2 years on the 10th of this month and I still haven't bothered getting another dog. I do believe it would help relieve the pain a little bit. I'm kind of hoping he comes back as another dog and finds me. I would know it's him because we used to put our heads down and kinda rub them together, like a show of affection.

Hang in there.

It was totally unexpected when the little premature pit bull puppy I took in grew up to be my boy that passed four years earlier. (99.9 percent sure it is him) It will happen when it is supposed to and when you least expect it.

Hang in there OP! Much love and hugs to you! I made a little sign with his name on it and hung it on a tree where I buried my boys ashes. I also had a memorial and invited all of my nieces and nephews. They shared their memories and wrote messages on balloons we released in his honor. He was loved by all. They all understood he was like my child.

I am sorry for your loss...people say it gets easier but I can't relate...I'm still in mourning and it's been 3 years since my beloved baby dog died... I still cry almost daily... All I can say is that at least your dog lived 13 years, a long life for dogs....mine passed at only 7 years.... so remember that when you start to cry...

God bless you and your dog...

Re: My Dog Passed Away Today
Yes, releasing emotion is the best way to heal, short of getting another dog. Crzy as it sounds, doing/seeing/hearing things that remind you of your dog, will make you sad, and you may cry, but by doing this you are discharging emotion. At some point, just like a battery, all the sad emotion will be discarhged and you wont feel so sad anymore. Doesnt mean that you will forget him, or never feel sad again, but it will lessen over time. The worst thing you can do is try to avoid the emotion that comes with memories of him. That is what I am trying to do, having put 4 dogs down over the years. So do things that remind you of him and feel sad and cry if you have to, but by doing so you will discharge the emotion, especially if you dont want ot get another dog to help with the healing.

EXACTLY !!! I was so heartbroken when my Sheba died in June. As I was out and about the next few days after Sheba died, donating her things to animal shelters and her meds to a low cost animal clinic for low income people, I came across this cute little Fox Terrier, whom I learned had been in the shelter for 1 1/2 months. She was passed over because of her age, 8. Everyone wants a young dog, it seems, or a puppy.I asked the shelter worker to let her out so I could at least give her some love, as her sad eyes had just gone through me.Well, the shelter worker let her out, the dog jumped on me and acted like she was my long lost friend, unceasingly slobbering me, whole body wag, etc. Well, she came home with me. it doesnt take long to find a dog once you start to see ones that you can actually take home with you. most of them all have sad eyes, especially if they are in a shelter, and once you go there, you just want to take them all home as they are all barking from thier cages/pens and saying 'take me home, take me home!!' ...

God bless you and your dear dog! I had this experience five years ago, and there's hardly been a day since that I haven't missed and mourned my beloved friend. I absolutely agree with you that he is with God, and we are in good company in thinking so. Both C.S.Lewis and the Rev. Billy Graham have directly stated that they believe our pets will be with us in heaven. The main thing we have to focus on is getting our own selves into heaven. "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved." "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life." I pray your sorrow will be soothed. Animals are so innocent and so kind and it hurts so much to loose them. May the Lord bless you and keep you and perhaps, in time, bring another lovely pet into your life. I will pray for you.

It get easier, but it never goes away. I lost my best doggie friend in 2003. Mr. Magoo was his name when we adopted him as an adult, He became known as "Gooey" to us. We nursed him through many health problems. You don't don't know the true age when you get a rescue, but we had him for 9 years. I believe he was 16-18 yrs old when he finally passed.

If I think too hard about him, I still cry. I've had other dogs since, but not like him. Although, I will say that now we have a cat whose personality reminds me very much of him. Weird, I know since cats are so different than dogs. When I described my cat to my son, I said he was the "Gooey" version of a cat. He got it.
