They're rarely actually safe for the individual.
They're deemed "generally safe" - but when you're dealing with specific people, you're dealing with specific situations in which being a test subject can have effects.

For example, John is an unwitting subject. The researchers call him every morning at 7:30 am to check on his progress/confirm he's still alive and in his home (something deemed harmless to do). That makes him late to work. Getting calls from random strangers/hangups puts him in a bad mood and lowers his work performance by 10%. Fifteen years later he develops cancer and can't afford the treatment because he never got a promotion.

Tiny ripples can have big effects in a single person's life. It aint nice to use people.

I'm a nurse and would get letters to participate in various experimental programs. Also, as a flight attendant, I received letters asking me to participate in a program to see how second hand smoke affected employees on airplanes. I never participated in any.

I grew up near a research hospital. There was an entire booklet of research you could participate in for cash. Scary shit.

I think one of the worst ones I saw was one where they would get you addicted to a drug over a course of several weeks, not tell you what it was, and then try to successfully get you off the drug.

Um, what if their treatment didn't work and you spent the rest of your days as a drug addict trying to find that substance again?

Yes...very scary!

Thinking back, they explained that some nurses would be given a placebo, and others would be given a drug, but I can barely remember what the drug was.

If I have a headache or backpain, I take one tab of Aleve....no more. I never took drugs and wasn't about to participate in experiments! lol

I was in an ivy league university in the early 90s watching them feed LSD (or some derivative of) to a room full of "volunteer" students (remember ivy league - some of them may have been our future/now current leaders) and then make them all watch gory Vietnam war video non stop on a screen that took up most of one wall of the otherwise dark room.

They had to have guards at the door to physically restrain the students and keep them in the room because pretty much every single one of them was freaking out.

Is anyone seriously going to tell me they didn't know the effects of mixing LSD and Vietnam by the frigging 1990s?

I did point out the wiki page of individual who requested the foia dr Aftergood and he has an interesting history. I was surprised even more that his name has never appeared on this site either.
