This is also known as the Star of the Sea. In Catholic doctrine, Mary is known as the Star of the Sea. Many other flags were designed with this in mind. For example, the Acadian flag and the Cajuin flag have the exact same lone star. These flags were designed by members of the Catholic clergy. The original flag designers knew what the symbolism was about. Anyway, just wanted to point this out to you, that the lone star really does represent Mary.
