The first legal slave owner in America was a black man from Angola, and he demanded his slave's portion of the property.

Furthermore, because of African tradition, people were slaves until the owner decided to set their people free. This along with European traditions of monarchy and serfdom led to black people being generational slaves, rather than capture, ransom, debt, indentured, or contractual slave.
