Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73886666 If they are anything like the American Meat Institute, you're probably right. Just cook them well. I've been blessed enough to grow shiitake in homemade sawdust blocks, and my goodness, they are fantastic! I've tried several times to grow portobellos, and they never grow for me. But I will probably keep trying. Because they are indeed fantastic and make a great meat substitute. My family calls them hippy dinners....No meat. lol. Shroom-tastic, Fluffy Pancakes. From what I can ascertain, unless you cook portobellos there is a chemical in them that is rather like a chemical in jet fuel. Sorry that I can't recall what it is right now. But the knock down is to cook them. Quoting: Fluffy Pancakes Hope that gives someone a little peace. :) and portabello mushrooms are cooked thoroughly and well, idk who wld eat them raw or any mushroom raw - gross to me |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22373790 They ruin everything, imo. Dirty, funky, musty... food? Have not trusted mushrooms from childhood on. Tell me, ALL mushrooms Have to be cooked? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76581815 from what I could tell after reading several articles on mushrooms today I would say yes or you’re likely ingesting some carcinogens actually, they’re not bad on salad cooked there’s this new restaurant and their signature salad is fantastic, the dressing is made from cooked sliced mushrooms, bacon pieces and balsamic vinegar served warm on top, it’s one of the best things I’ve ever tasted Forgive your enemies, it messes with their heads. Anonymous Coward User ID: 76231454 United States 06/11/2018 03:12 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It's not Portabellos..it's Agaricus mushrooms which are the white buttons most commonly found in grocery stores and restaurants. When not cooked properly they produce a chemical called "Hydrazine" which resembles rocket fuel. People have been eating them raw for years and undercooked...but what long term damage does it do is the real question. I try to avoid them and pick my own mushrooms from the forest. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 55721322 United States 06/11/2018 03:15 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Wikipedia: Agaritine [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] … Agaritine (AGT) is an aromatic, antiviral,[1] hydrazine-derivative mycotoxin and IARC Group 3 carcinogen that occurs in mushroom species of the genus Agaricus.[2][3][4] Studies have found significant (>1000 mg/kg) agaritine levels in fresh samples of at least 24 species of the genera Agaricus, Leucoagaricus, and Macrolepiota.[3] Mushrooms of these species are found around the world. They typically fruit from late spring through autumn, and are particularly prevalent in association with feces.[5] These mushrooms grow in a wide range of habitats; indeed, one species alone, Agaricus bisporus, is cultivated in over 70 countries and on every continent except Antarctica.[6] A. bisporus, also known as the common button mushroom, is of particular socio-economic importance because of both its prevalence in traditional cultural recipes and its booming cultivation industry in modernized countries.[6] Agaritine content varies between individual mushrooms and across species.[3] Agaritine content (% fresh weight) in raw Agaricus bisporus, for example, ranges from 0.033% to 0.173%, with an average of 0.088%.[7] The highest amount of agaritine is found in the cap and gills of the fruiting body, and the lowest in the stem.[8] Agaritine oxidizes rapidly upon storage, however, and is totally degraded after 48 hours in aqueous solution with exposure to air.[9] It has also been shown to decompose readily upon cooking (up to 90% reduction) as well as upon freezing (up to 75% reduction).[10] Agaritine has been shown to induce adenomas and adenocarcinomas in the lungs of mice when administered through drinking water.[11] It has also been shown to cause bladder cancer in mice.[2] Agaritine has been claimed to be a weak carcinogen, with an estimate for cumulative lifetime risk from mushroom consumption at approximately 1 in 10,000.[12] However, this claim is poorly supported, with little available data about toxicity and no published LD50.[13] |

Morels have to be cooked well to eat. You just have to know how to prepare these foods. I wouldn't worry about portabello mushrooms there are far greater health risks in our food supply. |

Quoting: Hitchcock Frank Paul Stamets is a mycologist, author and advocate of bioremediation and medicinal fungi. In other words he is an expert in the study of mushrooms. At around the 2 minute mark, Paul refuses to answer Joe Rogan's question on what the negative effects are of eating Portabello mushrooms. Paul states that his life is in danger if he answers the question!!! Wtf! Could it be that Portabello mushrooms cause cancer and the powers that be don't want us to know? I've done a little bit of research on this and the only thing that I have found is that Portabello mushrooms contain Agaritine which is known to cause cancer and mutations in animals. Does anyone know more about this? There's a MUSHROOM MAFIA? Who knew. |
