Can Iran Save Itself From the White House's Newest Warmongers?

The appointment of John Bolton and Mike Pompeo brings the US closer to a new war in the Middle East. Iran is an obvious target, but Tehran has some potent options to discourage Washington's war hawks.

According to Foreign Policy magazine, the newly-appointed White House security adviser “is a national security threat”, it noted that "John Bolton wants regime change in North Korea and Iran, and he’ll do whatever it takes to get it." According Michael H. Fuchs, former deputy assistant secretary of state for east Asian and Pacific affairs, "Donald Trump is assembling his war cabinet" and "if you’re not scared yet, you should be."

Former Israeli defense minister Shaul Mofaz told a conference in Tel Aviv that John Bolton tried to convince him "that Israel needs to attack Iran." It is highly unlikely that his views have changed, so the Trump administration plan on Iran is relatively predictable: first, the "nuclear deal" will be broken, then sanctions will be reimposed, and then a military strike becomes a real possibility. The only viable way to avoid another war in the Middle East is to make an American military intervention a no-win solution for Washington.
