If some tale is old it does not mean it's untrue.
Russia was managed this way for roughly half a millenia. And it does work.
Because, on the contrary with Western states it's not about nobles/merchants/honourable citizens suppressing king's ambitions and greed, but about Tsar containing greed and ambitions of them instead. Actually, all notable crises of Russian state occurred precisely when this principle was violated - either because the Tsar (whatever he or she was called at the time) was incompetent or there were some objective reasons.

There has been (yet another) "Rush to Judgment" over these alleged "nerve gas" assassination attempts in the UK.

The disgusting British government is presenting ZERO evidence, as in NONE WHATSO-FUCKING-EVER evidence, that Russia had anything to do with this.

I say this as a very concerned Englishman, who does not want to see some spurious major war erupt, over what is essentially, a trivial, criminal case.

They (the West) have tried to provoke those "oligarchs" to do so. That was the purpose of so called "sanctions".
Did not work well. Mostly because real oligarch were dealt with (either imprisoned for their crimes like Khodorkovskiy or forced to flew the country like Berezovskiy).
That's also one of the signs of what I've mentioned above: true leader of Russia can never be replaced by corrupt elites. Rather, he'll change elites the way he sees fit.
It's just that Putin is uncharacteristically mild in this aspect.
