You know what, our ancestors ate seasonal fruit that was harvested locally. If you back in time say the late medieval period, only the very rich could eat imported fruit and this persisted to the 1890's.

Now a banana is ubiquitous in American homes. I read somewhere that Germans eat more bananas per capita that anywhere in the world. That seems false given tropical climates and local production.

It is claimed that bananas are going extinct. Two generations from now, there may be no bananas.

A delicious banana alternative are fried plantains. These are served in many countries, say for breakfast. I bet you would like them.

I would bet your wife and children would enjoy it if you made banana pancakes with coconut syrup for Saturday breakfast. In my experience most people find it delicious. And you can serve some fresh pineapple on the side especially the "golden" variety which is especially sweet.
