Bi-polar disorder and possible associated violence | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 71632887 United States 01/02/2018 02:47 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I've been thinking (uh-oh) about bi-polar disorder. Although I do not have bi-polar disorder, I have known of some who have this disorder. I've been thinking specifically about violence associated with it. Quoting: Ms. Superduper This is what I found so far: The relationship between mental illness and violence is controversial. On the one hand, there is considerable unfounded stigma and discrimination toward the mentally ill based on the popular notion that psychiatric patients are dangerous people. On the other hand, there is a legitimate need for psychiatrists to identify and manage what risk of violence does exist in their patients. Research that examines how and why violence occurs in the mentally ill is necessary for psychiatrists to determine as accurately as possible which patients are prone to violence and to manage their care accordingly. [link to www.psychiatrictimes.com] If anyone else has experienced first hand, anything having to do with this, please feel free to share. I have to step away for a bit, but I'll be back later. Bipolar disorder is not manic or depressive. It's simply the fight or flight response going off (thoughts racing too fast). Or something of that nature. Everyone has the fight or flight response. Does that make everyone dangerous? I would say it leads to higher rates of suicide and maybe violence (if and only if the person cannot bear the financial aspects of it and the people they should be able to depend on, abandon them for being physically in pain). Meds can fuck you up, badly. Does coming off them make you violent? Problably not, as coming off the meds would make you be in intense pain, and problably unable to cope with anything especially hurting someone. Who knows? You'd have to do a study on it. I think it doubtful except suicide. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75745923 Just saying. Very true. I wonder if OP looked up differences between them No. I didn't. I never suggested that they are the same, or different. Shoot, I never even mentioned BPD. Greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world. Whatever feels good to your soul, do that. |

She was living with a guy about 2x her age. She was nice, I guess. I didn't know of her condition til much later, when the guy told me of it. She was nice at first and I always felt like she was probably abused as a child. Then he told me that she was bi polar. I do recall that she did take meds for that, though, and when she did not take them, she was seemingly very different and way out there off of the rails, compared to when she was on meds. She would come over and move my plants around on the front of my condo, and I would SMH and ask her not to do that, please. To that, she responded unfavorably. Her live-in told me that they argued constantly and that they were going to break up. A few years later, they were still going strong. 2. My friend had a friend who was bi polar. He also took meds. One night in a church service, my friend said, he went off on her and others in the middle of the service. It scared the bajeebees out of her. I don't recall what happened after that, but she said it was a violent thing, but I was not there so I did not see it. I don't like, and I doubt if anyone likes, big surprises like someone getting suddenly violent over something most people wouldn't be upset by. I don't like surprises. That's why I know what to expect from a drinker as opposed to a drug taker. Those are my only experiences with bi polar people and not really MY experiences, except for the first one. I am also wondering if someone affected with bipolar holds things inside of them and then might have a big outburst of violence later. Greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world. Whatever feels good to your soul, do that. |

You people should be ashamed of yourselves. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 49598504 Mmm, no. Not ashamed at all. Trying to get educated on this. You, however, should be ashamed of YOURSELF for coming on here and judging everyone. You are not God. Greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 49598504 maybe the reason these people still have bpd is because everyone else doesn't have a clue what they are talking about and let's be honest, doctors don't really give a shit and a have a pretty good interest in keeping you this way. Quoting: MissCleo with opioids comes grouchiness, which turns into violence. it's a huge job to deal with my bipolar because they didn't take care of themselves. Interesting. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75745923 Just saying. it's like saying side a and side b of a coin are two very different things. they're still part of the same coin. one leads to the other. the fracture in the mind at the point of past trauma is the root of the cause. the compartmentalization of memories results in split personalities whether they manifest or not. the differences are just how bad the condition is. splitting it all up into different medical names doesn't mean the root cause isn't the same. |

Quit taking them in 2009. My anger level has decreased dramatically. I cry at the drop of a hat and am glad to live with that rather than the anger. |
