Interesting.
What kind of machine do you use?

I use what they call a Powermatic II+, costs about $70 and it'll roll either king size or 100mm depending on what you prefer.

They would, state too for evading their tax stamp. Not worth it IMO.

Well, about six/seven years ago there were entrepreneurs who opened shops stocked with tobacco, tubes, and automatic rolling machines that would crank out a carton in no time.

You'd buy your tobacco, your tubes, and "rent" their machine to make you smokes. As I recall, the typical price was maybe $25 a carton.

All of a sudden each and every state started slapping huge taxes on "cigarette" tobacco and put these places out of business.

So today we're left with using "pipe tobacco" to make cigarettes. I use a bit of "shag cut" in my blends as they more closely resemble the cut of cigarette tobacco.

If I tried to sell my hand made cigarettes in any sort of public way I have no doubt I'd be hounded to the ends of the earth; that's the way government behaves if it thinks there's a dollar to be extorted.

I know it's not "conspiracy" in the pure sense, but I found it interesting that I could save a ton of money AND avoid the negative health consequences of buying "tailor made" smokes. Figured I'd pass it along for those who might find it interesting/useful.

What's that you say.. electric roller?

I remember the good ol' mechanical tube filler that opened like a stapler to insert tobacco then cocked like a loading gun to fill the tube. Good times!

I don't really know what kind of advantage you might get off an electric machine.. seems rather overkill, as it took like 3 seconds to roll it mechanically!

When I was a kid we used to be able to buy bags of super cheap unprocessed tobacco from the local shitshop, that was good. Much better than the precut brand name raw tobacco you could buy!

Yup, electric roller, time and technology march on!!

Hell, I remember the old "Laredo" kits with their strange, but oddly useful, roller gizmos.

Re: I just made myself a carton of great cigarettes for about $12. Life is good.
I've stopped smoking Marlboro cigarettes, the taxes on a carton of smokes here in Wisconsin have pushed the price up to about $80.00 which I find ridiculous.

So I "roll my own" with an electric roller. Takes me about 90 minutes to roll a carton which is easy to do while watching some Netflix.

The price? I use good tobacco so my price for a carton is about $12. I could do it cheaper but my goal is an enjoyable smoke, not a "how cheap can I make it?" smoke.

The nice thing about it is that since I started making my own I have no congestion, no cough, etc. Of course all I'm burning, now, is tobacco and the cigarette paper which isn't "fire safety" treated.

As I said in the title, life is good...

I do the same and refuse to use bUgle boy whatever.

and to all, check what YOUR state laws are regarding tobacco being shipped in as it is on the level of guns and ammo in certain fkd up states.
they label it all "pipe tobacco" so the cut and sometimes the moisture content is different so you do whatever and roll your own.
there are websites, smoke shops and forums.

and to the other 1s question--there are menthols out here, some simply flavored and some literally cured that way.

i can never find anything that taste like marlboro lights or close, know any?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75422234

I've been rolling my own for over 10 years. Cost? About $24 month for 4 cartons.

Marlboro adds Cocoa powder to their Tabacco to keep you brand addicted as well as nicotine addicted. It gives it that "Marlboro Taste".

To make it taste like Marlboro, find a tobacco that is smooth and that you like, then spread it out on some news paper, then spritz it with water from a spray bottle just enough to make Hersheys cocoa powder to stick. Start off with sprinkling about 1 tsp over 1lb of tobacco. Mix it up and roll one, you may need to add a little more to suit your tastes. Most people can't tell the difference.

Have you noticed any differences?

I switched to rolling my own with natural pipe tobacco years ago and found myself smoking less, getting winded far less frequently, and less anxiety too. The decrease in anxiety could have been from other factors and coincidental but I don't think so. I've gotten a pack of Marlboros or Camels from time to time and all the early signs of impending panic attacks start popping up every single time before I've gotten through the pack.

I would NOT advise using menthol tobacco if you like menthol cigarettes, though. I've tried it a few times and it's always been dried out, stale, and just way too harsh. The menthol filter tubes work like a charm, adds plenty of flavor without any harshness. Just figured I'd mention since it was brought up earlier.

Yes, I find myself smoking less. I don't have the side effects I used to have. Anxiety has never been an issue for me so there's been no change in my life along that variable.

You sir, are a fine human being!

'Rolling your own' is a fine way to increase self-sufficiency, as well as save money and increase flavor.

I used to smoke 3-4 packs per day of Marb reds, or Camels (especially Camel non-filters) for years and years when I lived in Texas.

Heck, as little as ten years ago, the local Ghandi-marts had deals on Marlboros, '2 packs for $2.22'. Every single day, I'd go there and say, 'Um, 4 packs please.'

By now, I've cut way down. I smoke tobacco in a pipe, and spend about $13 per week on pouches of American Spirit organic.

Just about the finest smoke I've ever had, and it's cheap and delicious. I personally don't like the papers (irritates my throat) but out of a pipe, it's wonderful!

Cool thread, five stars!
