Wood Bison being reintroduced to Alaska Wilderness

FWIW--

There are about 10,000 wood bison in Canada, and they can be hunted in the Yukon and in Alberta.

There are about 380,000 plains bison in North America, with about 1/2 being on private ranches.

There are about 4600 wisent--the European bison- in europe with about 1/2 being in the wild state.

Wood bison should be a good restoration project in Alaska. Moose and caribou prefer different plant foods than do the bison.

Very cool. So where did they come from?
Are the wood bison being moved, or raised for this purpose?

I would be living in Alaska if I didn't have two young adult children.
I have to wait until they are a bit more settled to make that move.

Are they as delicious as the bison burgers we grill all summer?

it is basically grass fed beef, it would be very high quality , very close to galloway cattle which is some of the best beef on the planet

will there be hunting them soon?

It's good to know some things are being preserved.
I would imagine hunting is part of the plan down the line
but at least steps are taken to restore bison through out
North America. Beats the news that hammers us down day in
and day out. Glad some others found this interesting also!

In 5 years there should be too many bulls--if we last 5 years. The state could sell permits for $5000 each for 20 permits and have enough to pay a full time veterinarian. In 10 years, absent some horrendous winter weather, there will have to be hunts to thin the herd to keep disease and starvation away.
