Or both? The wife keeps lamenting how fast the time flies. How quickly the kids grow up. How fast we age. I understand the concept, but for me at least, life seems to drag on hour by hour, day be day, decade after decade. When I look back after 63 years in this plane of existence, I am amazed at the many lives I seem to have lived. The many phases or chapters that when you add them all up simply stagger my mind as to how much I have been through and how much work I have had to do for so long now. How's life going for you guys?

Re: So Does Life Flash By in the Blink of an Eye, Or Drag Out One Minute at a Time?
My life, has been a whirlwind. To much of a story to even start, plus I'm a horrible writer. Long story short, I love my wife of soon 25 years. Of those years there has been a lot of life lived, she lost her father much more early than he should have left, cancer at 69.

My own Father at 92 just fell last Friday and broke his pelvis in 3 places, he can't come home yet so he is not happy. He is being sent to an assisted living facility, until he can take somewhat care of himself.

He is a WW2 vet, in the south pacific. Navy, he is down to 120# and very frail. That is hard to see, he was at one time 6' 240.

You are not without company my friend. My wife lost her Dad from cancer at 64 around 6 years ago. My dad died last December at 88 and Mom has been in a vegetative state for about 5 years now with Alzheimer's ay 89. Few may care about them but us, but then that is enough, isn't it? Navy in the Pacific in WWII was a tough gig. I for one salute him for what he did for this nation. Give him my regards, please.

Re: So Does Life Flash By in the Blink of an Eye, Or Drag Out One Minute at a Time?
Time warping is essential to sanity

if the perception of time remained constant
parents would be totally nucking futz before the kids turned 18

remember how long age 3 - 18 felt as a kid
15 years it felt like eternity
to the parents it appeared to blow by in less time than had actually passed

even I with no kids
watching my friends kids grow up have been time warped right along with them

There are other places and relationships which cause the perception of time warping

Red light:
less than 2 minutes sometimes feels like 1/2 hour
this is detrimental

With that special someone in your life:
an hour or 2 can feel like 4 or 5 hours
this is beneficial

embrace the time warp
enjoy the activities which change the perception of the amount of time which has passed
oh hai!

The current moments happen very slowly, but the events of the past are remembered instantly, so the past always seems to have happened quickly.

I can recollect on the past ten years of my life instantly, so those moments are compressed to this moment, making ten years mentally unmeasureable.

The idea of time is only a concept, a tool. We experience a perpetual state of "now". That is all we'll ever have.

If I live to the age of 80, I am sure I will look back and ask myself where has all the time gone. The time hasn't gone anywhere.

I sure hope people are wrong about this idea that the archons whisk your soul up and recycle you right back into a new body to harvest your energy all over again. I can't imagine having to live another lifetime...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73863475

This is why they wipe your memory, a "hard reset". Its probably happened to all of us endlessly. An infinite amount of times, going both directions - back and forwards in time. We're programmed to live just long enough that we won't completely lose our minds (the majority, at least) and also so we can't catch the patterns that would expose the illusion. Maybe technology and record keeping will shine light on this. Could it be that we are all in a 500 year cycle, or the like?

What would it be like to read a journal entry you wrote 500 years ago? Would you recognize your own thoughts? Does our personality survive the wipe, or are we completely a product of our environment? Further more, maybe we are all the same soul, living life after life and interacting with ourselves... like a house of mirrors... And growing into something greater than we can comprehend.

This is an idea that volumes of books can, and probably have been written on.

Without getting into the details of 'why' time speeds up for us: This is the most accurate depiction of how we perceive it during our life:

0-18 years = 50% of our time
18-36 years = 25%
36-72 years = 20%

@ 47, I can remember the last conversation I had with a buddy I haven't seen in 8 years like it was yesterday. We both pick up where we left off.

If a pretty girl is sitting on your lap, time flies. If you’re sitting in the hotseat, time drags by.

Was almost in what sure to be a fatal car crash and it seemed like time went from being fluid to a series of Polaroid pictures snapped quickly and consecutively yet in slow motion.
