They're normally used for carving or scraping designs into semi-dry pottery either by hand or by holding them against a spinning piece on a wheel. The 'actual' tools are much sharper....I was just being a cheapskate and didn't want to buy the tools for my first attempt in case I sucked at it...lol My handmade ones worked so I just used them again the next 2 years but I still want to go buy the real ones, it would make things easier.  Plan on sharpening them occasionally. Makes the tool glide through the out flesh easier.   I suddenly now do NOT want to taste one of your cakes...
