As a matter of fact both WWI and WWI were the end of the world as the people prior to them knew it. Thier lives completel changed from before to after. Along with the great depression and the dust bowl.

As for 'war of the worlds' I find that one to be a strech, yes it was for a 'few' but not a civilation as a whole.
