Color is just a perception of our eyesight and brains, ask someone who is color blind what color the sky is.

Blue on black.

It is what is in the sky and what light wave lengths it is, just as a prism breaks down light from the sun and it blue because of it. If the sky turns any other color, someone is putting things in the upper atmosphere to change it.

Also our eyes see it as blue, some creatures may see it otherwise, but our eyes have a way that breaks down what we see in colors our brains can understand. There are people who have disabilities that has to do with colors they can not see correctly or only in black and white and shade of gray.

How do we know when people are colour blind from birth? If we just see different colours, my red is your green, how would we know? How do we know? We would just be used to calling different colours different names without ever realising.

The daytime sky appears blue due to air molecules in the atmosphere scattering blue wavelengths of light from the sun more than wavelengths on the other (red) side of the light spectrum. At night the sky looks black because there is no light from a bright source like the sun to be scattered by the air molecules.

So the color is the result of light (or a lack of light) being scattered by molecules. There is no "underneath", the only difference is if there is bright light present to be scattered by the atmosphere or not.
