Series of jolts in South West Montana 16 over 2.5 at Northern edge of Yellowstone Magma Chamber! 5.8 rattled wide area!

Dang. those are some pretty high numbers. I know there have been swarms of late, but last bigger one i saw was in the 4. somethin range. Just one though.

That is a long way from the Yellowstone Caldera. Could affect it, but not likely connected.

The earths deep lava plumes are constantly moving underneath. You know how all the Hawaian islands are in seperate places and the end of the chain is most active? Yah, the hotspot for Yellowstone has moved a tad since the last eruption. You dont have to agree with me but this is the truth.

Actually it is now known it extend under much of Southwestern Montana and into Idaho..

HELENA, Mont – The hot molten rock beneath Yellowstone National Park is 2 1/2 times larger than previously estimated, meaning the park's supervolcano has the potential to erupt with a force about 2,000 times the size of Mount St. Helens, according to a new study.

By measuring seismic waves from earthquakes, scientists were able to map the magma chamber underneath the Yellowstone caldera as 55 miles long, lead author Jamie Farrell of the University of Utah said Monday.

The chamber is 18 miles wide and runs at depths from 3 to 9 miles below the earth, he added.

That means there is enough volcanic material below the surface to match the largest of the supervolcano's three eruptions over the last 2.1 million years, Farrell said.

This is 100 miles outside of (southeast of) Yellowstone.

You have your directions wrong it is NORTH of the Yellowstone Park near LINCOLN MONTANA not far from BOZEMAN.. I live 150 miles NORTH in HOT SPRINGS MONTANA and we felt it BIG TIME!!

Yes, there is a hotspot, and yes it has moved. However, where these quakes are is not at all in line with the past eruption history of Yellowstone. Montana is a huge state, the are quite a ways off.

The earthquake measured 7.3 – 7.5 on the Richter scale and caused a huge landslide that caused over 28 fatalities and left $11 million (1959 US$, $88.7 million 2016 US$) in damage. The slide blocked the flow of the Madison River, resulting in the creation of Quake Lake! Effects of the earthquake were also felt in Idaho and Wyoming.

We live about 150 miles from the epicenter--USGS has
it near Helena--The quakes appear to be slowly creeping
to the WEST (our direction...eeeekkks!) We are in East
Missoula (home of U of M--the Grizzlies.)

Will keep you posted...This is very rare for our area
even though we are in the blast radius for Yellowstone.

I lived in Plains, about this time last year was sittinf at the conoco eating a cheeseburger and the salt and pepper shakers started to dance across the table.....nobody seemed to notice but me. I would hike Baldy every weekend. ..this one time was relaxing by the lake felt a shake and a sheet of rock come sliding down the mountain.

Remember when Bardabunga kept having earthquakes and that fissure erupted, but the main volcano never erupted? If there's a minor eruption at Yellowstone, it has to be treated as the main event. We have to be prepared for major events and should use this as an exercise. It's only a matter of time before a major scenario becomes reality. Small nonzero probabilities happen given enough time.

I live in Hot Springs right near by.. our Springs are the most mineralized in the World.. oh and guess why.. the GROUND IS WARM AROUND HERE.. MANY HOTSPRINGS that sit over the Magma Chamber that is now known as the Yellowstone Magma Arm that is well into Idaho at Chalis and North to Helena and West to Plains.. it is huge... much bigger than previously thought.

Yea I been in the springs..smells like sulfur. When your at the top of Baldy you can tell there was an eruption in the past....I think it was a huge steam eruption.

Update 07:59 UTC: On October 31 1935 Helena was struck by an even stronger earthquake which measured a Magnitude 6.2!

The strongest effects were seen in the northeast, where buildings were constructed on alluvial soil, and in the southern business district, which contained many brick buildings. The most extensively damaged building was the Helena High School, which was completed in August 1935[2] and had just been dedicated in early October. The school buildings, which had cost $500,000, had not been designed to be earthquake resistant. Another building that was totally destroyed and had to be rebuilt was the Lewis and Clark County Hospital. The October 18 earthquake caused an estimated $3 million of damage to property.
The aftershock of October 31 caused an estimated $1 million of further property damage, particularly to structures already weakened by the October 18 shock.

By the OLD RICHTER SCALE (BEFORE 1980'S) the Helena
quake tonight would have been a 6.8 pt. if USGS had NOT
tampered with the original richter scale numbers. The
USGS downgraded by a full point (100s of magnitudes) all
quakes after Dr. Richter died. This was a large quake
in Montana for sure. (And I'm right in the middle of it--it
was freaky.)
