That is a long way from the Yellowstone Caldera. Could affect it, but not likely connected.

The earths deep lava plumes are constantly moving underneath. You know how all the Hawaian islands are in seperate places and the end of the chain is most active? Yah, the hotspot for Yellowstone has moved a tad since the last eruption. You dont have to agree with me but this is the truth.

Actually it is now known it extend under much of Southwestern Montana and into Idaho..

HELENA, Mont – The hot molten rock beneath Yellowstone National Park is 2 1/2 times larger than previously estimated, meaning the park's supervolcano has the potential to erupt with a force about 2,000 times the size of Mount St. Helens, according to a new study.

By measuring seismic waves from earthquakes, scientists were able to map the magma chamber underneath the Yellowstone caldera as 55 miles long, lead author Jamie Farrell of the University of Utah said Monday.

The chamber is 18 miles wide and runs at depths from 3 to 9 miles below the earth, he added.

That means there is enough volcanic material below the surface to match the largest of the supervolcano's three eruptions over the last 2.1 million years, Farrell said.

And 50% rule, Fox News:

""Earthquake swarms are common in Yellowstone and, on average, comprise about 50% of the total seismicity in the Yellowstone region," the University of Utah Seismograph Stations (UUSS) said in a statement on its website. "UUSS will continue to monitor this swarm and will provide updates as necessary."

Though experts at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) say the risk of the Yellowstone supervolcano erupting is quite low (the probability is one in 730,000), it may erupt again in the future.

There have been three major "caldera-forming eruptions" in Yellowstone in the last 2.1 million years, the last occuring 640,000 years ago. Since then, there have been a number of smaller erurptions, with the last one emitting rhyolite lava, causing the Pitchstone Plateau flow some 70,000 years ago, the UUSS wrote on its website."

Yes, there is a hotspot, and yes it has moved. However, where these quakes are is not at all in line with the past eruption history of Yellowstone. Montana is a huge state, the are quite a ways off.

Keep betting, but know this about the areas history: There was the 1959 Hebgen Lake earthquake (known as the 1959 Yellowstone earthquake) that occurred on August 17, at 11:37 pm (MST)in southwestern Montana. The earthquake measured 7.3 – 7.5 on the Richter scale and caused a huge landslide that caused over 28 fatalities and left $11 million (1959 US$, $88.7 million 2016 US$) in damage. The slide blocked the flow of the Madison River, resulting in the creation of Quake Lake! Effects of the earthquake were also felt in Idaho and Wyoming.

Sound familiar? The potential for catastrophe exists. Residents are correctly concerned.

Magnitude / Intensity Comparison

The following table gives intensities that are typically observed at locations near the epicenter of earthquakes of different magnitudes.
Magnitude Typical Maximum
Modified Mercalli Intensity
1.0 - 3.0 I
3.0 - 3.9 II - III
4.0 - 4.9 IV - V
5.0 - 5.9 VI - VII
6.0 - 6.9 VII - IX
7.0 and higher VIII or higher
Abbreviated Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale

I. Not felt except by a very few under especially favorable conditions.

II. Felt only by a few persons at rest, especially on upper floors of buildings.

III. Felt quite noticeably by persons indoors, especially on upper floors of buildings. Many people do not recognize it as an earthquake. Standing motor cars may rock slightly. Vibrations similar to the passing of a truck. Duration estimated.

IV. Felt indoors by many, outdoors by few during the day. At night, some awakened. Dishes, windows, doors disturbed; walls make cracking sound. Sensation like heavy truck striking building. Standing motor cars rocked noticeably.

V. Felt by nearly everyone; many awakened. Some dishes, windows broken. Unstable objects overturned. Pendulum clocks may stop.

VI. Felt by all, many frightened. Some heavy furniture moved; a few instances of fallen plaster. Damage slight.

VII. Damage negligible in buildings of good design and construction; slight to moderate in well-built ordinary structures; considerable damage in poorly built or badly designed structures; some chimneys broken.

VIII. Damage slight in specially designed structures; considerable damage in ordinary substantial buildings with partial collapse. Damage great in poorly built structures. Fall of chimneys, factory stacks, columns, monuments, walls. Heavy furniture overturned.

IX. Damage considerable in specially designed structures; well-designed frame structures thrown out of plumb. Damage great in substantial buildings, with partial collapse. Buildings shifted off foundations.

X. Some well-built wooden structures destroyed; most masonry and frame structures destroyed with foundations. Rails bent.

XI. Few, if any (masonry) structures remain standing. Bridges destroyed. Rails bent greatly.

XII. Damage total. Lines of sight and level are distorted. Objects thrown into the air.

We live about 150 miles from the epicenter--USGS has
it near Helena--The quakes appear to be slowly creeping
to the WEST (our direction...eeeekkks!) We are in East
Missoula (home of U of M--the Grizzlies.)

Will keep you posted...This is very rare for our area
even though we are in the blast radius for Yellowstone.

Heads-up!

cheers

Remember when Bardabunga kept having earthquakes and that fissure erupted, but the main volcano never erupted? If there's a minor eruption at Yellowstone, it has to be treated as the main event. We have to be prepared for major events and should use this as an exercise. It's only a matter of time before a major scenario becomes reality. Small nonzero probabilities happen given enough time.

Missoula, Mt / MMI IV (Light shaking): Thought my buddy was shaking the bed, light rumble then a few good jolts, nothing compared to the nisqually quake but enough to grab your attention.
Placerville Idaho / MMI IV (Light shaking): Shook bed. Moved bed enough to disconnect a plug-in. Outside deck moved and creaked. Felt slight aftershocks.
Stevensville / MMI V (Moderate shaking): Strong rolling shake with strong afterquake shortly after.

Missoula, MT / MMI IV (Light shaking)
Grantsdale, MT (165.8 km SW from epicenter) [Map] / MMI III (Weak shaking): Felt it in 2 distinct waves @ 5 secs each, separated by @ 40 secs. Heard deep rumbling both times. Light items swayed. The dog came over to lean against my legs!
Bonners Ferry / MMI IV (Light shaking): Working late when the map started shaking at about 11:30pm PDST, then it intensified after about 10 seconds to moderate shaking, then down to a rolling motion, and dissipated after about 30 seconds.

Helena / MMI IV (Light shaking)
Stevensville, MT (146.1 km SW from epicenter) [Map] / MMI V (Moderate shaking): Strangely, one very strong gust of wind blew through the open windows of the house just prior to the earthquake. There was a strong jolt that shook the walls of the log cabin and a couple minutes later there was a distinct but more gentle, rolling aftershock.

Update 07:59 UTC: On October 31 1935 Helena was struck by an even stronger earthquake which measured a Magnitude 6.2!
Wikipedia damage report of that earthquake :
There was widespread damage to unreinforced masonry structures in the Helena area with more than 200 chimneys being destroyed. The strongest effects were seen in the northeast, where buildings were constructed on alluvial soil, and in the southern business district, which contained many brick buildings. The most extensively damaged building was the Helena High School, which was completed in August 1935[2] and had just been dedicated in early October. The school buildings, which had cost $500,000, had not been designed to be earthquake resistant. Another building that was totally destroyed and had to be rebuilt was the Lewis and Clark County Hospital. The October 18 earthquake caused an estimated $3 million of damage to property.
The aftershock of October 31 caused an estimated $1 million of further property damage, particularly to structures already weakened by the October 18 shock.
Two people were killed by falling bricks in Helena during the October 18 shock.[2] Two brick masons died as a result of the October 31 aftershock, while removing a brick tower. Images below courtesy Wikipedia

By the OLD RICHTER SCALE (BEFORE 1980'S) the Helena
quake tonight would have been a 6.8 pt. if USGS had NOT
tampered with the original richter scale numbers. The
USGS downgraded by a full point (100s of magnitudes) all
quakes
after Dr. Richter died. This was a large quake
in Montana for sure. (And I'm right in the middle of it--it
was freaky.)

cheers

Since then, there have been a number of smaller erurptions, with the last one emitting rhyolite lava, causing the Pitchstone Plateau flow some 70,000 years ago, the UUSS wrote on its website."

what people dont seem to understand is that super eruptions are very rare but small eruptions are much less rare. chances are if there is an eruption at yellow stone it wll be small.

Wow! Montana.

The 5.8 is pretty respectable. Congratulations... in a way.

I've been in a 5.3... Shook things up pretty good. Cracks in walls and foundations, lots of movement... but no building collapses.

stoned then whew then happydance
