It may not be a catastrophic civilization ending event if it instead exploded in multiple or even hundreds of smaller eruptions, spread out over months or even years. Obviously, anything within hundreds of miles around it would be impacted still though, by earthquakes, soot, and magma.

Meanwhile, the hottest spot near the last eruption point in Yellowstone, has drifted a few hundred miles to the East. So its now under a part of the crust that's denser than it was previously. So if it blows out there, it may well be a super explosion that would wipe out most of the USA, Canada and Mexico.

This movement of the hottest spot may also explain why we are overdue for the next eruption. We may be forced to drill down and use nukes to break up the crust under this spot or under Yellowstone to release the pressure in a more controlled manner, which could be as risky as not doing anything and waiting for it to blow, but we could at least evacuate a large area around it beforehand.
