Re: TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN - Discuss the past, present and future of all things Twin Peaks
Twin Peaks returned to television on Sunday, May 21st. This thread is for those that are interested in discussing the series - what happened in the past on the show and the prequel movie, what is happening in the current new season, and thoughts about what it all might mean and what may be coming in the end.

As a HUGE fan of the original series - I was even present for some of the filming of the Fire Walk With Me movie - I am more than just a little thrilled with the best show EVER on television's return. Last night's premiere was spectacular.

IT IS HAPPENING AGAIN!

I am well versed in Twin Peaks for those that wish to have a serious discussion about any and all aspects of the show. I can answer most questions or can guide you to a better understanding of the show if you want. Or we can just discuss and debate some of the many things which - for now, anyways - have no solid answers.

Is it still but a pile of garbage?

It's the stuff GLP is made of. Read the thread for some insight.

It's even better than the first, because the 'supernatural' aspects are better understood now by more people and researchers, than they were 25 years ago.

Hi, Rachael...

Hulu, Amazon and Sling are featuring it besides Showtime.

Are you sure about Netflix? I accessed the old series on it late last night while answering the same question for someone else.

 Quoting: exlibris

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me is the movie that takes place before the events of the first two seasons.

I bought my physical copy but if you already have a Showtime subscription it's free to watch On Demand.

On other streaming services like Amazon you'll have to pay to rent or buy it.

 Quoting: exlibris

There were only 2 seasons. Season 1 has 8 episodes and season 2 has 22, and they are all currently available on Netflix.

Heya Gang! OP here. I see that the thread is moving right along. I won't be able to hang on this thread 24/7, but I will check it every day and try and answer any questions or comments. I see that there's quite a few already. So I'm going to start by clearing up this first page..

I never watched any of it. Thinking maybe time to catch up with a binge-watch---what's the general outline of the series?
 Quoting: MarPep

The best show EVER on television. It goes to the heart of the unseen world. The forces that guide our destinies. You can't see them. You can sense them, but even if you saw them your mind would cover up what you saw with a screen memory because it's too much for your mind to take. BVut they are there. They are underneath. They explain the mysteries of life. They cause the mysteries of life. They ARE the mysteries of life. It begins as a soap opera murder mystery - sending up all of televisions formulas for making such trite trash in the process. And is quite humorous as it does so. Then it starts getting more and more serious. At this point, it's about as hard core of a sci-fi drama as you can get.

Can I watch this without watching the original seasons?
 Quoting: neocide

The original seasons and movie are essential to understanding what's going on in the revival. Otherwise you're going to be pretty lost.

They are definitely worth watching though! Check them out. :)

Sweetroll Bandit is another of my Peaker Buddies. When I'm not on the thread, her and Esoteric Morgan are in charge. And she is right on here. David Lynch says that you need to see at least the movie, Fire Walk With Me. I disagree. Watch the whole thing. You'd be cheating yourself otherwise. I would say to even get and read the essential books that go along with the show.
---The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer
---The Autobiography of F.B.I. Special Agent Dale Cooper: My Life, My Tapes
---Twin Peaks: An Access Guide to the Town
---"Diane..." - The Twin Peaks Tapes of Agent Cooper (Audio book)
---The Secret History of Twin Peaks
All are worth reading. The last one listed is the newest and has a LOT of very vital information. I would say that anyone following the series that closely should at the very least read The Secret History of Twin Peaks.

Happy to see that you made this thread OP. I'm a ridiculously huge fan of Twin Peaks and David Lynch and have been looking forward to this since it was announced. I haven't looked forward to something this much in so long.

I'm especially pumped that David Lynch directed every single episode while each episode was also written by both David Lynch and Mark Frost. They have so much more creative control over this project than they did with the original with ABC.

This is going to be phenomenal.

Plus, Angelo Badalamenti is back with the scoring/composition/music for the series again and he is absolutely fantastic. Him and Lynch are one of the greatest Filmmaker/composer combinations in film history (so much great work together.)

Also, Peter Deming is the DOP/cinematographer for every episode as well and he is fantastic. Him and Lynch have done great work together.

Not to mention much of the fantastic cast members returning as well as many other great actors joining in!

So pumped!

Twin Peaks is chalked full of absolutely fascinating concepts on many many many different levels. So much going on. May be more relevant to our actual reality than most realize.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72687328

You're so welcome! Not much to add there. I agree 100%. All the way down to your final line. With places like CERN playing with opening up other dimensional doorways it serves as a stark reminder of what we may be starting to play with. Glad to have you with us - post any and all questions and comments to the thread as you watch the series unfold.

GT-winn

Thanks for the thread. Just watched episodes 1-3 last night and yeah, let's just say that the little sleep I did get I had some fucking crazy dreams!

I don't think it's really even fair to call DL a film/tv show director, nor do I think it's fair to call his work "movies" or "shows." This shit last night really transcended beyond "entertainment" and entered a whole new realm and dimension of insanity...and maybe brute REALITY.

The new Twin Peaks is as close to the other dimensions/afterlife/heaven/hell that we have been allowed to see on a TV screen. Only in our dreams, nightmares, death, and trips have we encountered these places.

On a side note, I was just out in North Bend, WA and Snoqualmie where a lot of this show was/is filmed and checked out some of the locales.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34398756

You're welcome. I HAD to make this thread. I love Twin Peaks and I wanted a thread here run by somebody that cares. No one made one by Monday so it became me. I have seen the first four parts at this point, but we need to talk about Parts 3 & 4 until after Sunday. But again, YEAH. Everything you are saying. It is indeed a glimpse at things we probably shouldn't be seeing. Here's the thing with David - he wants to see only beauty. He looks at a beautiful row of flowers. Then he digs in and sees that their roots are infested with bugs. Further down, he finds what can only be the remains of something that was once living. It has been buried there. And it is actually helping the flowers up on the top to be even more beautiful with it's natural fertilizer. David shows you the dead rotting body first. Because that is what is underneath. But if you bother to take the ride, you will eventually arrive at the top - and those beautiful flowers. Though they may be a little wilted by the time that you get there. Snoqualmie and North Bend are beautiful year round. I have been to most of the locations. Some while they were actually shooting the movie. We got busted breaking into the old traincar. But the cop let us go because his wife was busy at that very moment back at home sewing Twin Peaks doilies to sell at the local gift shop.

Very cool last night, but some parts I was in "what the fuck?" territory.

I need to brush up on the series, been years.
 Quoting: Some Guy in Indiana

You probably should. Just because it's so fun to watch and is a great ride to get to the now. But don't feel bad - us hard core Peakers were left out in the cold of Whatthefuck Territory ourselves. It just wouldn't be good Lynch if it didn't start like that, though.

Too bad Laura Flynn-Boyle put too much plastic on her face.

I hope the best for her.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74524139

Who?

Seriously - fuck Lara Flynn Boyle! She bailed over a quarter of a century ago from the series. Didn't even do the Fire Walk With Me movie. The character of Donna Hayward was needed for the movie. And Lara let everybody down by refusing to do it. No other cast member did this. Most would NEVER say no to David Lynch about anything. And for the record, Moira Kelly did a much better job at playing Donna Hayward. Much sexier, too.

So now, Twin Peaks is back and she's not needed anymore. Sorry, Lara, but you never bite the hand that feeds. And besides, Twin Peaks is certainly better off without you!

 Quoting: BEAST333

What an ignorant and inhuman comment.

First of all, Lara Flynn Boyle's altered appearance is mostly the result of a serious medical condition that she's been battling for some time - not just the cosmetic procedures that she's had done. Instead of being such a jerk, how about showing some sympathy?

After all, we're talking about an actual human being, here - not just some inanimate object that appears in shows and films for your pleasure. Seriously; have some decency.

Furthermore, she suffered some pretty traumatic experiences, while trying to navigate Hollywood as a young woman. She was only a teenager when she was cast in "Twin Peaks", for god's sake, and she'd had a very difficult childhood, as well. Add in all of the Hollywood manipulation, brainwashing and such...and it's no wonder she had a difficult and challenging path, which affected her career choices.

You don't have any personal knowledge as to what went on behind the scenes of "Twin Peaks", either.

I would think that someone who is posting on a conspiracy forum would at least be intelligent and informed enough to know about the horrible things that occur in the film industry.

By the way, Kyle MacLachlan also refused to play his full role in "Fire Walk With Me" - something which seriously changed the entire course of the film - so you're wrong about LFB being the only one to do such a thing. Also, a few of the other actors refused to appear in this new season of "Twin Peaks", too.

For someone who is claiming to be a "HUGE fan", you don't seem to know what you're talking about, honestly.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74938155

I'm not going to get into arguments here. But I thought I should address this idiot. Though I'm not sure where to start.

I DO have personal knowledge as to what went on behind the scenes of Twin Peaks. I have spoken to many of the cast - on more than one occasion. I was sitting in a booth with David Lynch - eating cherry pie and drinking coffee - when they filmed the scene with Big Ed that was cut from the movie but later released as part of The Missing Pieces. So I do know a few things.

Lara never suffered ANYTHING while filming Twin Peaks. Her trauma in Hollywood came later when she tried to make it on her own and then hooked up with Jack Nicholson. He used her like the rag doll that she is and then tossed her to the curb. Her plastic surgery was done due to an obsession with getting older and being unable to play younger roles. It's YOU that seems to have NO knowledge of what you speak of.

Kyle never refused anything. He had his own ideas for the character and fought hard for what he thought was right. He would have never abandoned his role as Agent Cooper. He still to this day says that it is the role he was born to play.

And the only cast members who didn't return were those that were retired from show business or those that were not asked to. A lot of those people were bummed that they weren't in the new script. Most actors and actresses will work with Lynch under ANY circumstances. Even Catherine Coulson (the Log Lady) who knew she was dying of cancer and had six months to live insisted on still doing her role.

Never underestimate the love that is associated with David Lynch and Twin Peaks. Those that have worked on Twin Peaks and those of us who watch it have a real love for the show and it's characters. It's always been more than just a television show to some of us. I'm sorry that you are apparently unable to feel that.

I am new to this show and watched episode 1 and 2 of the new series.

I dont get half of it.

From the storyline ive read it pickes up after 25 years from a murder on a woman.

But then in the show you have these super slow talking people. that room with the cube. demons or something? then that murder case in the hotel that they now arrested someone for..
man i wish someone could explain everything to me :P

Bloody hell man you've started this story on the last chapter and wonder why you're confused!

Go back young jedi, you are missing literally 30 episodes from Seasons 1 and 2 AND a 2 hr movie!

Watching those will help immensely with your confusion. yoda

You might be thinking of the sheriff's station but close enough. I just visited that location and found Dirt Fish Rally owned the building and seemed to be using it for a couple offices and a gift shop.

Perhaps you are correct and there is another building on the property. North Bend is a cool town and still resembles how it looked in seasons 1 & 2 quite a bit. Snoqualmie on the other hand has been built up quite a bit by rich Seattleites but the waterfall and "Great Northern" are still the exact same.

This is why I'm going to keep watching each episode over and over...I've already forgotten the shovels!

I told myself I would NOT take notes this time around, but it looks like I better get writing.

Those shovels had me watching that short scene at least four times, and still I had no clue.

And we're talking about Dr. Jacoby. A mountain man now! Oh...wait. A mountain man? Oh... I may be getting a message about this.

Heya Gang! Op here again. I'm going to try and tackle all of the Page 2 stuff. It looks like some actual discussions are beginning to happen here. And thanks to whoever repinned this today. Let's keep it up there. I'll try and grab the next repinning.

So let's get at it...

The entity in the glass box in New York City looked like a grey alien. Wasn't Major Briggs involved with alien contact, if i remember well?
 Quoting: Diener und Herr zugleich

Yes, He worked on Project Blue Book for awhile. I believe that in discovering how to begin to traverse alternate universes and realitiies, the Air Force used him. He was described by his superior Colonel Riley as the "best pilot" he has ever known. It has always been thought that Riley meant other worldly piloting.

I'm a big fan of the show. Just rewatched season 1 & 2 recently to refresh my memory for season 3.

BUT.... I am really disappointed with season 3. It just felt too stupid to watch.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73855082

WoW! There's something wrong here. If you're a big fan of the show and followed it all the way through Fire Walk With Me, then you should be as excited as the rest of us. The early seasons have been said to have some "stupid" sideline stories - mostly caused by David Lynch being away from the show and filming Wild At Heart - but if you think the new shows are "stupid" either they are WAY beyond your comprehension skills to understand or you accidently turned on some shitty HBO movie instead of the Twin Peaks premiere.

Is it on Netflix or Hulu? Anything streaming?
 Quoting: Tctpom

I'm pretty sure that both Netflix and Hulu have the pilot, Season 1 and Season 2. Showtime has them all as well as the movie and is offering a 30 day free trial right now to get you hooked. It's also worth digging up The Missing Pieces which are the scenes that were cut from the movie. VERY important scenes. It's literally a movie all on it's own. Essential viewing is...
---Pilot (NOT the international Pilot with the bogus ending)
---Season 1
---Season 2
---Fire Walk With Me
---The Missing Pieces

That whole NYC glass box portal thing is very compelling as an opening meme for the series, considering there's been 25 years for, um, other planetary conjunctions? to have caused interactions...or, what happens in twin peaks is simply one part of a widespread dimensional portal system that an alphabet has tapped into.

From the moment I saw the guy sitting on that couch STARING at at that box in a warehouse, my mind was like 'whoa! That's some clandestine government op going on!" I guess we're soon to find out more on that count.

That odd window looking out at the cacophony of city lights with muted stars in the night, then the box. It wasn't until a later shot that I saw a hint of the tube, but, I totally did not expect the tube to extend outside, or, Coop to materialize into and through it, OR...bleed back into a wormhole.

I have to wonder if 'it is future, or is it past'...meaning, before the couple on the couch is attacked, because the glass is intact when Coop floats in. We really have no idea how long that box has been around, and WHY it has an extension to the outside.

Is it supposed to be a closed-looped vacuum of some sort, designed to 'pull' things toward it?

My mind also has me thinking of ley lines and other 'ethereal' connections.

The possibilities are exciting!

All I really know is that I'm going to watch it at least once more this week, to see what I missed first time around.
 Quoting: esoteric Morgan

I don't think that it's an alphabet agency. We were told by Sam Colby - the guy watching the box - that he worked for a billionaire. A billionaire who has this kind of setup in New York City. So it's a Trump type character. Spending their money on monitoring a black cube that is obviously connected somehow to The Waiting Room of The White Lodge / Black Lodge. This billionaire is paying to find out information about...an alternate Earth? Another dimension? The Lodges? The question now is WHO is this billionaire? And are they tied in to the town of Twin Peaks? Could it be Ben Horne? Or Audrey? I find it odd that they haven't mentioned her yet. She was known to survive the explosion at the end of Season 2 - and they showed her father and uncle - yet there hasn't been a word about her yet.

"It is future, or is it past" indeed. Remember our conversations over the last couple of weeks, Morgan. I told you it had to do with time displacement. The scene where Cooper arrives in the box AFTER the couple have been killed, yet they are in the hallway getting ready to enter the room is a perfect example. Remember, I also told you that Phillip Jeffries (David Bowie's character in Fire Walk With Me) was KEY to understanding what is going on. And who was Doppelganger Cooper trying to talk to on the phone - Phillip Jeffries. Though it wasn't him. It was someone pretending to be him. Or so it seems.

We're all going to need to rewatch this a few times before we completely understand what we just saw. Or even partially understand it.

Project Blue Book, blue rose, trans-dimensional entities/aliens, deep gov. conspiracies etc.

For fuck sakes, one of the first things out of Agent Cooper's mouth in Season 1 was- "I wonder what really went on between Marilyn Monroe and the Kennedy's, and who actually pulled the trigger on JFK." That was 25 years ago. I'd bet my life without TP, places like GLP wouldn't even exist today.

This show is a GLP'ers wet dream.

I agree. And this show is one of the first to actually deal with the fact that entities that may be among us or infiltrating our planet may not necessarily be from another planet or even travel in ways that we can understand. It basically strives to lift the veil that our subconscious minds keep in front of our eyes at all times - sometimes as screen memories - to protect us from that which we cannot comprehend fully. Owls were a famous screen memory for those that were "abducted" by aliens. Many people remember seeing groups of owls or a large looking owl as their last memory before waking up in their car five hours later with vague memories of being taken aboard an interplanetary ship. I believe - and have always believed - that THAT is what the Log Lady meant when she originally said that "the owls are not what they seem".

Thanks for posting about Twin Peaks, Beast333! I'm a big fan, too, since the original airing.

My first impression was that this season is much darker than the original series, even surpassing FWWM in tone and vibe. There's a lot to take in that's going to need more than one viewing, at least for me, to pick up on and notice. Figuring out how everything ties together is going to be fun.

I'm wondering, though, if the book Mark Frost wrote, The Secret History of Twin Peaks, ties into the new season. I read a little of it but never finished.

Gotta admit, I loved the scene at the Roadhouse where Shelly stuck up fo James: "James was always cool". It felt like a jab to all the James haters. As much as I hated the James/Evelyn storyline and cringe at the Doo-wop sing-along with Donna and Maddy, I truly do like the guy lol.
 Quoting: Gidgemo

You bring up two great points. First off, The Secret History of Twin Peaks is vitally important. It brings up histories that I am convinced will be playing a major part in this new installment (it's NOT a series - it's an 18 hour movie cut up into parts). I'm trying not to bring up too much from it yet. But there are stories in it that explain quite a lot. Like the Log Lady's experience in those woods when she was just a child and her connection to Carl Rodd - the owner of the Fat Trout Trailer Park where Teresa banks lived.

The Roadhouse scene was cool. I'm not so sure if that was a jab at the James haters or just Shelley's way of being nice to him after mentioning that he had been in a motorcycle accident ans wasn't quite the same. It's like "he's so cool even though he's not all there" and the nice girl adds "yeah, he was always cool even before the accident".

But so far, no one has mentioned what bothered the hell out of me during that scene. Whenever it flashed to the bar, you could see what looked like Jacques Renault serving drinks. Jacques was the second of three brothers - the other two being his younger brother Bernard and his older brother Jean (who later tried to exchange Audrey Horne for Agent Cooper in retaliation for Jacques death which he blamed on Cooper). So what the hell is he doing back in the Roadhouse serving drinks. His character is listed as Jean-Michel Renault. And he looks EXACTLY like Jacques.

I'm not sure what is going on. But like I've mentioned in emails privately to some of you, I believe that time displacement and alternate timelines plays an important role in all of this. One thing that adds to my theory is in The Secret History of Twin Peaks book. In that history, Norma's mother has a completely different name and is said to have died long before the murder of Laura Palmer. But her mother shows up with her new husband Ernie in tow - quite alive - for a few episodes during Season 2. When Mark Frost was asked how he could have made such a mistake in his book, he said that it wasn't a mistake and that all would be revealed later. All I can think of with all of this is that there is an alternate Earth within what we are watching that we don't know about yet. And THAT could explain a lot of things.

I liked James for his innocence in the face of having grown up the way he did. The motorcycle is more a symbol of his needed to fly from that life, and fly into something more tangible...a world with hope, where love is enduring and real.

The early episodes play much like a soap opera, so I saw James in that light. Soapy and sappy, but, honest and true. Which made him an anchor for struggling youth at times.

I'd like to hear more about Frost's book, also.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34398756

James is/was one of the good guys. Confused in his youth. Hormones raging. But you could always tell that he was TRYING to do the right thing. Eventually, it seemed like the only thing left to do was to leave town.

The book explains that the stories about the woods near the town of Twin Peaks have been around since before the white man set foot in this country. The Nez Perce indians lived in this region - Hawk's ancestry that the Log Lady alluded to in her call to him in Part 1 - and their sacred ground was desecrated to make room for the lumber industry to move in. It also explains that the jade ring has been around just as long. It goes into greater details about the government's involvement in exploring and then covering up the UFO phenomenon. And it explains how Dougie Milford - the mayor's younger brother that brought back Lana to marry in Season 2 - worked for the CIA and played a major part in covering up anything to do with UFO's, aliens, and the Ghostwoods outside of Twin Peaks.

was it good ????

1. I was transfixed for two whole hours watching it

2. I will rewatch it

3. It was creepy as hell

4. Great returning cast spots.

5. I will keep watching it

Yes to all a million times over.

I loved the original show and loved this episode. I will make some interesting thoughts I had about the start of season 3:
1) Cooper has been controlled by Bob the entire 25 years since season 2 and is even looking like Bob (hair etc).
2) I believe Bob is the owner of the see through box (Bob is probably very rich) and is part of his plot of him not going back to the other world.
3) The grey alien was most likely the arm thingy with the tree head.
4) I believe this episode was more like Fire walk with me then a normal episode. The episode has no music AT ALL till right at the end, at the Bang Bang Bar. This was done on purpose and is a tell to us, the audience that the show is heading back to what the original series was like.
5) I believe the murders Bob did 25 years ago (Lara specially) and the murders he has done in this episode were somehow an effect by him so he could stay in the material world. His goal is to live, and he will do it by any means.

Great episode, so many questions. I feel sorry for Cooper :(.
 Quoting: TassieLurker

1.) Yes, after all those years they have become one
2.) Um...no. Bob is/was an entity. Bob does not have money. Or only the money his meat suit has. And it doesn't look like Cooper is swimming in millions. And he seems pretty desperate at this point since he is being called back to The Black Lodge in the next 24 hours.
3.) That's one theory. I believe that it is most likely some OTHER entity which saw the doorway that opened when Cooper arrived from The Waiting Room and took advantage of entering this realm as well. The question - besides what exactly it was - is whether or not it is still here.
4.) Definitely more of the dark feel of Fire Walk With Me than the original series. I think this will continue. The lack of music almost seems like a statement from Lynch about the lack of much good music within the real world these days.
5.) Yeah, he is desperate. I'm thinking that he was trying to get himself arrested. Could the bars in a jail cell be a way of stopping something from grabbing him and taking him back?

Nice to see you REALLY thinking when you watch. Keep posting here as it goes along. Between us, we MAY be able to figure some things out.

So we just watched the very first pilot for series one and my question is does it get any better? this seems overly the top dramatic and downright corny at times.

We are always late for these series, we actually just started the walking dead this past winter and binge watched every season until we were caught up in only a month. I didn't think I would like TWD but we ended up loving it.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70890511

See my previous posts. It was meant to be a send up of all of those night time soap operas like Dallas and Knots Landing. With a big, grand storyline underneath it. Just keep watching. It gets better and better the longer it goes on. By the time you get to the end of Season 2 and move on to Fire Walk With Me you won't even recognize it as the same show. And now, it's becoming even better and deeper.

Re: TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN - Discuss the past, present and future of all things Twin Peaks
Sorry if this was asked before, but:

What are the movies that are associated with Twin Peaks and where can they be seen?

Thanks in advance hf
 Quoting: exlibris

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me is the movie that takes place before the events of the first two seasons.

I bought my physical copy but if you already have a Showtime subscription it's free to watch On Demand.

On other streaming services like Amazon you'll have to pay to rent or buy it.

I just logged into Netflix and they are listing the season 1 and 2 available for viewing. We're there more than 2 seasons?
 Quoting: exlibris

There were only 2 seasons. Season 1 has 8 episodes and season 2 has 22, and they are all currently available on Netflix.

Yes! I noticed Walter O right off the bat. I did a double take (like everyone else I'm sure). He didn't look so well; I think I read somewhere that he was sick and having a really hard time. Anyway, I think he was credited as a Renault brother.

There's a theory going around that Laura is trapped in the Black Lodge with Coop and that it was her doppelgänger that was actually murdered....Laura says she's dead but alive, Leland tells Cooper to find Laura. People are also pointing to the picture that Mrs. Tremond gave Laura in FWWM, that she entered the Black Lodge through it. It's an interesting idea, though I'm not sure if it holds much water.

I think you're onto something about an alternate reality. Could be a number of residents of Twin Peaks have or are doppelgängers.

I met Kyle MacLachlan in a fancy bar once back in the 90s. I was too drunk though and he just wanted me to leave him alone, lol.
