Re: TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN - Discuss the past, present and future of all things Twin Peaks
I never watched any of it. Thinking maybe time to catch up with a binge-watch---what's the general outline of the series?
 Quoting: MarPep

I am skirting some things here, so I don't give too much away.

There is an abduction and murder in a sleepy little town in Washington, close to another state line, and, the Canadian border. Because the victim that broke free fled across state lines, the FBI is called in.

The agent who arrives sees similarities to a previous murder he had investigated of another young woman, Theresa Banks. This agent has an ability to connect dots that come to him in dream visions.

Some of the older residents of Twin Peaks remember stories from their youth of 'things in the woods', that adds an air of mystery to the town.

Twin Peaks may be sleepy on the outside to most, but as the investigation digs deeper, the seedier side of this idyllic town starts to reveal itself.

Basically...the series has undercurrents of all manner of devilish deeds that points its finger's back to the death of Laura Palmer.

Even once the killer is revealed (which was forced by the network, leading some viewers to stray) the story leading to Laura's death has yet to be solved sufficiently...so the aura of mystery remains fresh through 30 episodes, while a good deal that remains unresolved begs for deeper understanding.

There's still a killer on the loose, but neither Twin Peaks, nor the FBI, realizes what they've missed.

But...we viewers have a pretty good idea.

======

As I said before, there's only so much that can be said, without revealing spoilers.

So we just watched the very first pilot for series one and my question is does it get any better? this seems overly the top dramatic and downright corny at times.

We are always late for these series, we actually just started the walking dead this past winter and binge watched every season until we were caught up in only a month. I didn't think I would like TWD but we ended up loving it.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70890511

I missed it first time around, only watching it a couple years ago.

I'm pretty certain you'll find it much more than a little bit intriguing as you go on.

The first episode gives you an idea of personality types you'll meet, and how they approach life in general. Like Coop...you've just arrived in Twin Peaks, and have no idea what you'll find.

It is admittedly soapy in undertones...that's why you'll see that soap opera featured on and off as the story unfolds.

As in a soap opera, or, while watching a soap opera unfold, there's elements in Twin Peaks' story that blends treachery with everyday life. Those watching from the outside of events find themselves drawn in, sometimes to the point of losing themselves in the drama, or, find themselves digging right in to figure things out for themselves. Others remain oblivious as the story goes on...again, just like life, despite things going on around them.

The series has so much to offer, so many diverging and converging themes, almost everything looks suspect.

I think you should definitely go back and keep watching.

Re: TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN - Discuss the past, present and future of all things Twin Peaks
I was in middle school in 1990/1991. I didn't watch the series back then (since didn't really watch tv at all) but I do remember people talking about it and who killed Laura Palmer. In 2015 my kid (who is a teenager) told me that I needed to watch this series on Netflix called Twin Peaks. I thought it was going to be stupid but I decided to watch the first episode and I was hooked. I watched both seasons pretty quickly and also Fire Walk w/Me after I finished both seasons. I was really looking forward to season 3 but I was pretty disappointed with what I saw last night.

I saw the first 4 episodes since I have Showtime and they had the first 4 episodes on there. Not all viewing mediums have all 4 episodes, some only have the first 2, so I won't give any specifics since I don't want to ruin it for anyone.

I miss the old Twin Peaks and the mood it set. It was more innocent even though it was sinister. I was hoping that season 3 would be a continuation of seasons 1 and 2 but so far that isn't the case. I realize there was no murder left to solve but they could have stuck to Twin Peaks and the mystery could have been what happened to Cooper. I don't like that very little of the new season is set in Twin Peaks.

I am withholding judgment until I see all of season 3. Maybe it will get better. The first 4 episodes seemed to drag for me and they were irritating at some parts. There was a section where Cooper meets an asian looking woman (who looked like the asian that was married to the lumber mill guy, but I couldnt see her eyes so not sure it was her) and she was;t really talking and that part drug out too long I thought. There were other parts that were too slow for my taste too.

Not saying that the new season isn't Lyncharian, it is. And if he had done a new series then it would be great. It's not really Twin Peaks and that is what disappoints me.

My son also suggested I watch it, back in 2015.

As for this season...I really think there's a lot more exciting themes in store for us, with the first two episodes just laying out the groundwork for it.

What originally went on in Twin Peaks, with the ancient carvings in Owl Cave, the Black and White Lodge dimensional activity, the conjunction of the planets every 25 years, what happened to Bowie's character -who disappears through a time warp or something for 2 years, then disappears back, finding himself in Brazil (?) in Fire Walk With Me- and so much more...

...I'm very excited to see just how 'global' these mysteries night lead us. If we're talking portals through spacetime, and all the other unexplained phenomena that goes along with it, the history and purpose of that glass box makes this all the more compelling to me.

That strange tree:

While that 'arm' tree might seem too bizarre to some, it kind of makes sense to me:

Think a combination of the Philadelphia Experiment, and, souls/spirits reincarnating into things other that mortal beings, like many cultures believe...like trees, for instance. How many stories and films in our lives have had trees that talk, with faces? And ancient beliefs that trees have spirit, and wisdom...

...like Margaret's log.

The same goes with time travel memes, where the person passing through some portal or machine doesn't come out exactly as it went in?

THAT'S how I view that tree. An amalgamation of energetic parts that have soul and memory and a means to convey what it knows.

Just a thought that came to me.

I liked Julee Cruze (sp), some of her music was used on the show.

Anyone know if she's putting out new music or if they are using her again?

I am thinking the new season will involve time travel, multiple time lines and aliens. I am looking forward to seeing more. I am glad you started this thread.

It's interesting how we both got turned onto Twin Peaks because of our kids. My daughter never finished watching the series but I sure did.

I am glad I didn't watch it back in 1990/1991 because having to wait a week for a new episode to come out and then having to watch commercials would have been brutal.

Us Dutchies can't see shit or have to do it illegally...read reviews stating nobody understood a thing of the first 2 episodes. In my view that's real promising in Lynch universe. Can't wait. Now to find time to view...

*Spoilers ahead*

I liked it quite a bit. Actually thought "Bob Cooper" was pretty entertaining to watch and the best part about it.

Thanks goodness it didn't try to pretend it is 1991 again. I much prefer the current cable-like way of presenting itself. Hopefully any camp, soapiness, etc will be sprinkled in in wise amounts.

Are these 2-hour showings considered two or one episodes? I do hope they are only one. I haven't looked forward to tv shows in a long long time.

So what is "Bob Cooper" up to? Who is he working for? In his secure communication's setup was someone mimicking his normal contact? Is he connected to the billionaire? Of the people who were dead or were killed in the episode was the method the same? What was doc receiving in the beginning? What in Buckhorn, SD has to do with anything?

My advice would be to keep watching it. When I watched it with my bro 20 years ago, we both agreed that the soap-opera shit was over the top BUT that it actually helped set the atmosphere for the show e.g. characters and the location.

Also, Lynch is all about long, drawn-out, overly-dramatic scenes. It's part of his style. Maybe my least favorite part but hey, it takes each part to make the whole.

!!!!!!!SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!

A question from Season 3; which timeline were "we" in when Cooper comes back and makes contact with Albert and Gordon? If him and Cooper from the lodge switched places right before the car accident, which Cooper are we actually dealing with in that "timeline?"

Both Albert and Gordon said they had a really bad feeling about the Cooper they met in jail, and that he had "greeted" Gordon Cole in the wrong way.

You really should binge on the first series, then watch Fire Walk With Me.

It will take quite a bit of time, yet, it will answer many of your questions.

Since you've seen the new episodes, you'll understand that there's an other-worldly aspect to its mystery.

Without the proper background, the things you saw were seen without proper context.

Go binge. Read this thread; there's some helpful hints for newbies to understand starting out...but, without the original series, you'll have no idea WHY the things you've already seen have special meaning.

Don't expect to understand everything. That's what this thread is here for...for viewers to exchange thoughts and look for insight.
