Just a thought, if you have not informed the Anti-Fowl Ordinance about Quackers demise, you may want to slip in a new-Quackers to fill the role and no one will be the wiser. I understand that new-Quackers will have a hard shoes to fill, but give a bird a chance. Sorry for your loss. old-Quackers is in Heaven. Welcome to the Deplorable States of TRUMP. I hope you can remember all the great memories and put behind you the end. I lost a dog 7 years ago to lymphoma, had him for almost 8 years. I remember more of the last year and battling the disease than the previous 7 wonderful years. His sister is still with me, at 14+, I just thank God for every day, I have no expectations now. She's the sweetest being I have ever know. Thank you Tiger for being a compassionate being, please honor Quackers with loving memories and rejoice her life. Till you meet again, RIP. |

She was the only licensed duck in the city of Hammond,Indiana, having been grandfathered in when the ordinance against owning fowl was implemented years ago. She is also in the history books for being a write-in candidate during the last mayoral election. Quoting: tiger1 Quackers was a Mallard duck, rescued by me when she was 3 days old, on July 4th 2003. My husband and I were fishing at Wolf Lake Channel, when I heard a baby duck screaming about a couple of hundred feet from where I was fishing. I dropped my pole and ran over to where the sound was coming from. There was this 3 day old duckling, screaming, next to the body of her dead mother, who had been killed by a predator. There were no other ducklings around, and I assume the predator that killed the mother probably killed and ate them. I scooped her up, put our gear away, and took Quackers home. I had 2 different Vets look at her injured wing, but there was nothing they could do, and she would never be able to fly. I assume the predator had damaged her wing. So, she became a house duck, since she would never be able to be released back into the wild. She was my youngest daughters constant companion, and my "Baby Ducky". She had her own little pond we installed in the yard for her. She had partial run of the house, too. She followed me around like a puppy dog. She was sweet, and very affectionate. She loved to be held on my lap, and be petted like you would a cat or a dog. When she was running around, whether it was in the house, or my yard, I just had to look at her and say "are you mommy's baby ducky?", and she would lay flat on the ground, cheep like a duckling, and want me to hold her and pet her. She also gave hugs, where she would drape her neck over my neck. Last night, when she was starting to go down, she gave me 2 hugs I was getting ready early this morning to take her to the Vet, to see if there was anything they could do for her, but she passed away while I was getting ready to go. Yeah, I am crying my eyes out right now, and have been since last night. Quackers was given much love, and she gave total love in return. She is so missed. I entered a coloring contest when I was 12. I actually used my brother's name beacuase you had to be younger than 12. I won..(or my brother won). The baby duck was so precious. I raised it from 2 days old. Quacky was so intelligent. Mom made me keep him in the basement. Quacky got huge!! Mom told me the duck had to go. So, I went to my friend's house and asked if they would take care of my duck. Yay!! They will take care of my duck!! One week later I went to my friend's house to visit my duck. I could not find him! My FRIEND told me her mom cooked it! She thought that was funny. It was not humorous at all! How insensitive some people can be. I never forgot the betrayal. |

She was a very lucky duck to have been rescued by you and you were lucky to have her in your life for such a long time. God bless Quackers and you and your family. I know your hearts must be broken but try to focus on how blessed you were to share each others lives. I know you'll see Quackers again. *hugs* In his poem Human Pride, Marx admits that his aim is not to improve the world, reform or revolutionize it, but simply to ruin it and enjoy it being ruined: With disdain I will throw my gauntlet full in the face of the world, And see the collapse of this pygmy giant whose fall will not stifle my ardor. However, you gave Quackers 14 years she would not have otherwise. She had a good life and you had a special friend. Your sadness is evidence of your bond. Quackers beat death for 14 years and lived a good life. This should celebrated, you should be congradulated and she should be remembered fondly. Now when you think of Quackers you cry but one day you will reflect and smile. |

Bless their little hearts..The pain of their passing never stops me from doing it over and over again. I could not imagine a life or a world without our furry/feathered angels. When the pain subsides a bit, I am always glad to have known/loved all of them and to be loved by them. ETA..my duck friends never bonded with me like yours did...my geese were different, tho..the ducks were always more independent..the geese imprinted on me and I could not ever be outside without them at my side..the ducks followed, at a distance..always nosy, a little rude and always with something to say about everything.. I miss them all. :) Last Edited by Abi ~ on 05/19/2017 09:47 PM You accept the love you think you deserve~~~ Love cannot live where there is no trust~~~ Truth has no temperature~~~ Love like it's never gonna hurt~~~ Have no regrets~~~ |

A switcheroo wouldn't work, as Quackers had to have a physical every year from the Vet to get her yearly license. Her right wing was very deformed from the injury she got from the predator. There is no duplicating that, or her age. If I wanted another duck, I would have to move. I did notify Animal Control and the city about Quackers death. She created a unique situation in being grandfathered in, and I thought it was the right thing to do to inform them. The pic was taken last night, when Quackers was starting to go down for me. She is in her cage for the night, which is actually an extra large dog crate. She is loose during the day in the house or the yard. Praise God from Whom all Blessings flow !!! |
