Here's a story....

I was in Kuwait, before the war, in 2003. On a rifle range, just doing some shooting and hanging out.

I felt what was like a slap on the back of my neck, but something stuck on there. It was a HUGE bug, like a fly. I whacked it, but it didn't die, and flew away. No kidding, it was as big as a golf ball.

My neck was numb for two days. No marks or swelling, just numb. The doc couldn't even see where I got bit, but he did the needle poke thing without me knowing, and I didn't even flinch.

It was THAT numb. Kinda freaked me out. But, the human body is pretty resilient, so all was well soon enough.

If the stinger got into the knuckle joint, the swelling would be in a closed space and hurt like hellfire.....

In the Army in the Panamanian jungle and looked down and saw a tiny little fly on the back of my hand. It was not much bigger than a gnat but had the shape of a housefly. It was iridescently colored from bright blue to bright green. As I swatted at it with my other hand, it bit or stung me and flew off. Within two minutes and nonstop for two days my whole hand was like it was on fire. I am not allergic to any bugs and have never felt any bite or sting from anything even close to the pain from that tiny fly.

You're screwed for days + it will likely permanently mark you. I hate those bastards and try to swat or zap (The Jolt is the best) every one I see.

The Jolt Zapper on e-bay for about $24 delivered is THE BEST. Snap, crackle, pop MF'er.................................

Just popped a bigger capacitor into an old Jolt. Better than new! It (Jolt zapper) also grounds the grid each time you unpress the button (big +).

The carpenter bee swarms will be toast in a few days here.

I call them war scars and have 3. Damn neighbor half starved his horses and every day I fed them Kudzu leaves (which they love) and fought off those demon flies.

More like a deep red spot that has lasted for 10 years so far. Talk to a dermatologist now if it's gonna be ugly/visible. Think the level of toxin/your sensitivity determines the severity/longevity. Mine have never gone away but those bit me good (really bad).

Seriously though, living da the beach in Florida we deal with the yellow fly which is in the horse fly species. I've gotten bitten by one and got a massive burning hot swollen leg from it. The area get extremely red with a darker dot in the center. Annoying pain for about a week.

Those beach flies ( I was swarmed @ St. Joe, FL beaches causing me to swim far offshore) are lame compared to a damn horse fly. Always be alert to swat them. They are evil.

One time on a fishing trip I got stung by a deer fly, which I think must be a close relative, stung me right through my sneakers. Ruined the fishing trip for me, I can tell you.

I'm usually pretty immune to insect bites, but this one proved to be the exception to the rule for me.

are you sure you didn't get some kind of flesh eating bacteria from it... that usually causes extreme pain and then you lose your entire arm or hand 24 hours later

They're bad here around pools, the splashing water attracts them and they're about as big as a dollar coin. Their bite is no joke. Feels similar to a yellow jacket sting.

I remember as a kid learning to hold my breath for a VERY LONG TIME while swimming because they would be buzzing around the surface

Deer flies are the smaller tan ones with pattern wings, ,whorse flies are the bigger dark gray/jet black ones, both bites are painful. Get blue solo cups and a tube of tangle foot. The flies are extremely territorial and will swarm the blue cups and stick to the tanglefoot, put a cup coated in tanglefoot on the lawnmower before mowing the lawn.
