The big cotton plantations back then were the big corporations of their time. They owned most of the slaves and they were the ones that mistreated slaves.

The big cotton plantations were owned by northerners, and foreign money.

Owning a slave was very expensive. They cost today what a brand new Cadillac would cost. Add the expense of maintaining their health, education, food and housing and then you can see that most average people could not afford them.

Why do you think they wanted to free the slaves? Because a slave is expensive and an "employee" is cheap in comparison. Let the employee worry about paying taxes, feeding themselves, education and housing on some meager salary.

1% were massive slave onwers and plantation onwers with more than 100 slaves

24% were landowners and farmers with less than 20 slaves


65% were non slave owning farmers

And 10% were poor people of the woods
