There is a new 40-foot wide stream next to the Oroville main spillway!
It starts at the :32 second mark of the video at the link.

On your screen it appears on your left hand side. It looks like a long indenture that runs up to where the spillway is damaged.

It might not look like much, but the same stream was about 10 feet wide a week ago and maybe 20 feet wide up until about two days ago. It's at least 40 feet wide at the river.

It's pulling a lot of earth down, so it looks more brown than white and exits into the Feather River about 200 feet to your left of the spillway.

Will it be 80 feet wide tomorrow?

Will it suddenly pull down a large mass of earth? How would that affect the spillway itself?

Yes, I did cure my Stage 4 cancer in two weeks when I was 48. I also reversed my chronic kidney disease (glomerulonephritis) when I was 25. In neither case were any medical treatments involved.

You mean the spillway is BS and about to fail and be washed away. I agree.

Compare this photo before the crack up. Enlarge it to get a good view.

You'll notice there is no divot winding its way down the side of the hill. The divot is irregular as you would expect from a stream.

Thank you.

Your image highlights the channel made by the emergency spillway.

The new one is smaller (at present) and in between the circle and the spillway itself. The new stream runs about halfway up the main spillway. It's source of water starts where the top plume of water is seen.

The channel highlighted in the photo is a different channel. The emergency spillway is the one that overflows if the water goes over 900 feet or so.

The main spillway is that ribbon of white water in the center part of the photo. It's from that spillway that the new channel appears.

I wonder why they don't have that mini-dam under the spillway in the river removed yet.

It seems to me that would be a top priority.

Ok but the pic says 2/24 and the ES overflowed 2/11 so how is it still flowing if the ES was the source

You're probably looking at the wrong channel. It's not the channel created by the ES early on.

The new channel is presently smaller based on the width of the MS, the bottom of the new channel sits about 200 feet to your left as you look at the photo.

You're still mixing up the ES with the MS. The MS is pouring out water in a 200 foot wide white ribbon. That is where the new stream is coming from - NOT the ES.

Re: There is a new 40-foot wide stream next to the Oroville main spillway!
The DWR acting director, Bill Croyle, is not overly concerned about the stream because they are finding that the bedrock is strong under the main spillway.

"For his part, DWR acting director Bill Croyle now speaks with confidence about the ability of the main spillway to last through spring. But the agency wasn’t always so sure.

"After the crater formed in the lower third of the main spillway on Feb. 7, DWR closed the spillway gates to check the damage. A day later, engineers resumed the flow of water, but gingerly, conducting test runs at low volumes of water to see how the spillway would stand up. The tests sent tons of concrete and soil down the chute in a gush of water the color of chocolate milk. Water also flowed over the sides, eroding the spillway sidewall and carving into the hillsides.

"Within a day or so, DWR officials said the water was pouring out clear and that the erosion on the spillway itself seemed to be in check."
