THEIR STRATEGEMS.



ADVOCACY JOURNALISM:
ADVOCACY JOURNALISM

WOULD 1) CONVEY OR COMMUNICATE DESIRED POLICIES WHICH

COMPRISE A WORLD-VIEW ALONGSIDE THEIR MISSIONS STATEMENT 2)

PRESENT BOTH SIDES OF AN ARGUMENT. 3) CONSIDER ALTERNATE

THEORIES 4) DRAW CONCLUSIONS BASED ON THE EVIDENCE 5)

ADVOCATE ACTIONS APPROPRIATE FOR ACHIEVING THE OBJECTIVES




CRITICISM JOURNALISM: INSERTING AN OPPOSING STORY

OR OPPOSING SOUND-BITES ABOUT A POLICY, PERSON OR GROUP.

AIRING VARIOUS COMPLAINTS WITHOUT RESOLVING THE SITUATION.

PRESENTING A FIX IN THE GUISE OF A SOLUTION. IN PASSIVE

CRITICISM, SOMEONE OTHER THAN THE JOURNALIST MOUTHS BELIEFS

OR PROPOSE FIXES. WE NEVER LEARN IF THE JOURNALIST AGREES

WITH THE POSITION, OR NOT. IN DEVILS ADVOCACY OR BALANCED

REPORTING, THE JOURNALIST USES EXAMPLES FROM BOTH (TWO)

SIDES. THE JOURNALIST MAY LOAD MORE EXAMPLES ON ONE SIDE.

HE OR SHE MAY OMIT A 3RD PERSPECTIVE. NO OUTCOME IS

PRESENTED. INTERVIEW CRITICISM IS DEFINED AS A

NEWSCASTER OR HOST SUBSTITUTING AS A STRAWMAN FROM THE

OTHER SIDE. HE MAY ATTACK THE INVITED GUEST.




OBJECTIVE JOURNALISM:
FACT JOURNALISM. PRESENTS

WHAT?, WHERE?, WHEN?, HOW?, BUT USUALLY NOT UNDERLYING

WHY'S. OBJECTIVE JOURNALISM SHOULD NOT ELICIT SUBJECTIVE

RESPONSES BY THE VIEWER, NOR PRESENT SUBJECTIVE OPINIONS OR

SOUNDBYTES. IT IS EASIER TO CONVEY OBJECTIVITY IN

NEWSPAPERS, WHERE THE READER HAS MORE DISTANCE FROM THE

PRESENTER.


SALES JOURNALISM:
THE PURPOSE IS TO ATTRACT

VIEWERS. IT USES ARGUMENT OR SALES TECHNIQUES BORDERING ON

PROPAGANDA (APPEAL TO EMOTION,SENSATIONALISM, SYMPATHY,

SHORT SKIRTS). IT BORDERS ON PROPAGANDA. ITS AIM IS TO

INCREASE RATINGS OR REVENUE. PAY FOR PLAY STORIES FROM

THIRD PARTY OUTLETS ARE FEATURED. THE SALESMAN OFFERS

OPINIONS FOR THE VIEWERS AGREEMENT, TO ATTRACT THE VIEWER

AS A FRIEND OR CONFIDANT. THE REPORTER MAY CONVEY

FRUSTRATION OR ANGER WHEN RECITING A STORY.
