Looking in on things , this here is my thoughts on this idea. No way any programmer has this sick of a sense of humor. Things are just too twisted in life and in this world

I believe that we are a recreation of an extinct species that killed itself off. The remains of our civilization was discovered by a successful, space-faring race that reconstituted us to replay how and why we destroyed ourselves.

You really must not be paying attention to the computer graphics/vfx developments in the past few years. The things that are becoming possible in terms of creating photorealistic simulations are pretty awesome.
