For Oroville Dog Owners Or Those in Emergency Situations
Any emergency situation or situation that may become an emergency is stressful for anyone affected. A pet can add to the stress. It can also help reduce stress knowing your friend is with you and being well cared for, ready to guard, protect, comfort and love.

Many places don't allow pets. Some places that ordinarily won't accept pets will make an exception if you can show your dog is healthy and cared for.

If your dog has fleas, call your vet and get meds that will quickly eliminate them. No one wants their dog infested by inconsiderate owners. It's no shame to get fleas, but it's a shame to keep them or have them around other dogs.

If your dog has had a recent exam, call and ask your vet to fax or you pick up a health certificate stating your dog is free of parasites and has no communicable diseases.

If your dog hasn't had a recent exam, ask about the certificate anyway, but at least have proof of rabies and/or distemper/parvo vaccinations.

If your dog is prone to bite, you suspect it would bite, or is dog aggressive, you've hopefully trained it to wear a muzzle. If you haven't, get a muzzle anyway. They'll need a crash course on wearing it. Make sure it's the right size and learn to use it before it's needed.

If your dog has a crate, try to fit it in. It can be filled with food, a favorite toy, blanket, water from home, bowl, etc. A crate is comfort, like a den, and an animal can relax comfortably knowing they are secure in their small area. It may also make a difference as to whether or not your dog is allowed to stay.

If you have doggie doo bags, take them. If not, take large baggies and make use of them whenever your dog goes in a public place. Take garbage bags in case a disposal receptacle isn't nearby. It can be emptied when you find one.

Take paper towels and pet wipes. If your dog has an accident, clean it right away.

Treats that the dog is accustomed to and you know won't upset his stomach can be a nice reward for good behavior in a stressful environment.

Regardless of how good your dog is, and how friendly, dogs are affected by your emotions and your stress.

Aside from the fact that some are allergic to dogs, some are very afraid of dogs, and others just plain don't like dogs, keep your dog to yourself. Don't allow him to approach other people or animals.

If your dog is a resource guard...otherwise friendly but will remove the hand of anyone attempting to get it's favorite toy or food, keep the resources away from the dog while in the area of other humans or pets.

If the majority of dog owners follow basic rules of courtesy and keep our dogs under control and their nose out of others business, the more likely people will see them as welcome visitors in the future.

For those sheltering with others who have dogs, notice the common courtesy bandana or ribbon that may be on a dog. A muzzle is a clear signal of it's own. Stay away.If you can't remember what each color represents, think of a stop light.

Green Bandanas

A green bandana means that the dog is known to be FRIENDLY, and would love some attention. In a stressful situation, dogs don't always behave the way you'd expect. Those who don't have dogs as well as those who do, can go a long way to helping keep everyone safe. Always ask for permission before approaching any dog!

Yellow Bandanas
A yellow bandana means CAUTION!
The owner may allow contact with the dog, but the dog may not like certain people, objects, or may be prone to unexpected behaviors.

Red Bandanas
Red means DO NOT APPROACH!
It does not always indicate the dog will bite. It means that the owner does not wish for their dog to be approached. The dog may be in training, old, post surgery, or submissive, requiring protection from overly enthusiastic encounters with other dogs, children, or adults.

Thank you Dog Lives Matter Too. Was just reading that one of the shelters is in need of cat food and kitty litter. If anyone evacuating has extra, it would be awesome to be able to share with others. Heartwarming to know that some people care so deeply for their animals. Heartbreaking to hear about those who have few options.

Re: For Oroville Dog Owners Or Those in Emergency Situations
Strong leashes and collars are very valuable for pets. A ft. or 18 inch leash is very useful for a large dog. Keeps them close to you while in line or making sure they stay in your "area" in a shelter without sniffing the cot next to you.

A 5 ft. leash is also handy but some parks allow a 6 ft. leash for dogs.

A 25-30 ft. leash comes in handy if you have a dog that needs more exercise than you are able to give them by a walk. Far enough to chase a ball; close enough to reel them in if someone is approaching.

Many of the items listed as good to have are luxuries for many. Especially for emergencies.

If you don't have a leash, find a piece of strong rope.

If your dog isn't in prime shape, hasn't been groomed like he's ready for show, don't worry. No one expects to see a dog appear in that condition in an emergency. What they'll see is someone who cared enough to get their pet in a secure situation.
