And no rain to speak of going into January. Another dry year, or will we get it all in March?

Wonder if it will be like the winter of 2017-18

Here's a video of Lake Tahoe in January 2018

Here's one in February 2018

Notice absolutely no snow by the lake. And no snow until you get almost to the top of the tallest mountains.

Looks more like summer or at least late spring instead of winter.

Typically that place is covered under many feet of snow at that time of the year.

If this winter ends up being like that winter for California they are going to gave a fire season like no other come summertime.

The water has to flow to So Cal.

Clean cars and full swimming pools.
They drain the lakes in the north, so that the reservoirs in the south can be full.

Fluctuating reservoir levels behind earth fill dams are not a good thing. But CA doesn't care. None of the elite live around here.
 Quoting: Crunch62

Wasn't California really dry last winter and haven't they been dry so far this year?
I'd be more worried about wildfires in California next season than the dam breaking unless of course this winter really changes around.
Of course the dam could be in trouble sometime in the future if a winter like 2016-17 or even worse like 1861-62 were to happen.
From what I heard Los Angeles saw over 60 inches of rain in the winter of 1861-62.
That's probably about what Eureka averages.
Just imagine how much northern California probably got that winter.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74709602

It's rather interesting that in 1861-62 was when the Civil War was going on.
Today it looks like another Civil War is about to happen.
Perhaps the 2nd Civil War starts next year and maybe the winter of 2021-22 will be a repeat of the winter of 1861-62.
Many of the worst events in US history have happened or started in years that end with a 1 following an election year.
We'll just have to wait and see.

Yeah, Kiewit wasn't so happy when the failing gate structure 'burped' after the DWR photo Op and Kiewit had workers down in the spillway. Pulling out those temporary supports had unexpected consequences.

A major faux pas when dealing with a safety-minded company like Kiewit. I'm sure the litigation over that issue is ongoing.

The dam is not fine. Thankfully, there is photographic evidence of the things DWR is trying to conceal from the public.

A few winters ago I heard about Chicago having no snow on the ground most of January and February.

That must have been pretty freaky.
It does look rather scary when a place known for getting so much snow like Chicago and Tahoe gave no snow on the ground in the winter.

Wonder if Alaska has ever had no snow on the ground in the winter.
Probably not.

Only 2.22 inches of rain this season. Normally, we would be closer to 10-12 inches in December.

Either it is going to be another drought year, or we will get it all in February-March (it has happened).

The next few weeks should tell the tale.

Haha. Hardly a yuuuuuge storm. Barely a half inch of rain.

The dam is not fine. Yearly 'needs assessments' with details hidden of the deficiencies we mere mortals are not allowed to know even though our lives are at stake.

Yearly inspection reports noting the same issues for decades that still have not been addressed.

The dam is not fine. CA DWR is not fine.
