Merriweather is a genius with wild edibles. When I was on FB I was friends with him and sent him a few messages and have a good convo about wild edibles.

Now I just need to find some time to get back out to the woods instead of stuck behind a computer working.

I've gone into the wild. ampm minimarkets. shell stations. a rare 711 here and there.

so you go in and you stuff a cheese danish in your pocket. then leave. wild edibles. or go to the food market. because when society collapses I'm raiding the electronics store like everybody else and pawning my ass for shelter.

Re: Learning about survival, wild edibles
Where I live, there are over 300 species of wild edibles, many of them both nutritious and medicinal. I have 8 books on edible plants in my area, and during my weekly hikes, I try to identify new ones I didn't know about.

If SHTF, I'll probably have found a least a hundred by then, and my family and I will never go hungry. Just last week, I found a 70'x30' field completely filled with Mallow.

Any prepper ought to seriously study wild edible plants. Food storage only goes so far, and you may become separated from your stash before then. It you can hunt, trap, or fish, you'll need plant food for vital nutrients. Anyone ever hear of "rabbit starvation"?

Re: Learning about survival, wild edibles
Rabbit starvation is a deficiency possible if your diet consists of only rabbits... Supposedly by eating the offal of the rabbit it can be prevented (though I vaguely recall the suggestion that the offal be eaten raw)

Rabbit is too lean

Hey wild edibles? Ever eat anything from the Eleagnus species? Goumi? Autumn olives? So-Shang?

Lee Reich is another author you would like. His unusual fruits book is excellent.

Re: Learning about survival, wild edibles
The peterson's field guide is the most complete. Start by learning the weeds in your yard; dendelion, plantain, chickweed that can be found nearly year round unless you live up North. Tom Brown jr teaches the big 4; pine, oak, cattail and grasses. You can't eat grass but most seeds are edible. Just make sure to positively identify anything you eat. I know damn near every plant where I live though it would still be a challenge to keep myself healthy year round - something you can't do without supplemental meat.

video reminds of a 3 hr class I taught where we didn't get 100 ft down the trail there were so many edible plants.
