Quoting: Anonymous Coward 38102773 Anything gtx900, gtx800 or AMD is shit comparatively. AMD will be back on top in a year, but not now. If your budget is 1k+, 1060 is a no brainer. If you don't care about games, and never will, at least make sure it has an ssd and a 45watt quad-core. No 15w U-series bullshit. Just cruising glp and porn. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 40451702 United States 12/27/2016 10:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | get a LENOVO , freakin' indestructible machines and rugged/durable for very heavy users (like myself) Acer is a cheaper/lower quality brand and reliability is hit n' miss. I bought an Acer laptop in spring 2011 and by fall 2012 it croaked. Also bought an Acer tablet in early 2012, has since failed. Earlier this year (2016) bought an Acer gaming laptop that was on sale, thing crapped out after 2 weeks and i've had it with Acers and their subpar quality, no more. In contrast i've had my trusty Lenovo 15.6" laptop since December 2012 and it just keeps "going and going" like the energizer bunny. I have been unemployed for some lengthy gaps since 2012 and i've literally run my Lenovo for upwards of 13-15 hours (all day basically) and no hiccups. I am very impressed with the quality of Lenovo. Oh and, newegg and amazon are your friends Good luck |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 73291556 United States 12/27/2016 11:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | OP, if your used to a chromebook, just get one again. I hate them, but if it works for you that is your cheapest bet. You can get an i7 Lenovo 560 with an HD screen (not the best but good) with 8 MB Ram and an SSD drive for around 500 bucks. You can get a good refubished 14 inch laptop of various types for around 300 bucks these days. I like Lenovo and Asus myself, but every maker has crappy and good pcs. If you get a PC and not a Chromebook get an intel i5 or 17 or an AMD A10 chip. Don't get an A6 or A8 you won't be happy. |

Dell is also good,,,,,avoid HP like the plague, total crap since the female ran HP into the ground with her minority hiring practices. Dont spend much on a laptop since when they break, you wont be out much. I currently bought a used IBM dual core for 75$ at a flea mkt and I upgraded with an SSD and more RAM,,,,,works well. |

Oh and, newegg and amazon are your friends Good luck I bought a refurbished Lenovo T400 on TigerDirect about 4 years ago and have been very happy with it. It was only 300 bucks. At the same time I bought a refurbished compact desktop Lenovo as well and that thing is ultra dependable and was like barely 200 bucks. Those were somewhat older models that had Windows 7 Pro and new hard drives etc with the refurbish. I don't know what newer Lenovo models are like. I did a lot of research before I bought that laptop. There are good tips about specs on Newegg. |

Can I get some suggestions for a sub $1,000 laptop please? Quoting: truthseeker314 My last laptop was a Chromebook and it was pretty decent. It was the Toshiba one with a good screen. Should I stick with a Chromebook or go for a different OS? Look at the cooling architecture. Overheating is the thing that kills most laptops. Air cooled Asus ROG laptops have a great duel cooling setup with CPU and GPU heat sinks. Go with something that has that design or you will be shopping again in a year or so. |

Just clean out any dust once every few months and they just keep humming along. I hear Asus is solid too. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 73682091 Greece 12/28/2016 12:20 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thanks for the tips. I don't need a laptop for gaming. mostly for email, spreadsheets, and browsing. My toshiba chrome book 2 did a good job. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73157784 any recommendations for a good chrome book? Is Linux Mint worth checking out for me needs or is that too advanced? I would go with this [link to www.newegg.com] Reason. It has a 6th generation skylake CPU with a quite fast built in graphics processor. The display is a class of its own with a 3200x1800 resolution. You won't find that with any other chrombooks. Not even the super expensive google pixel book has such a resolution. If you run into any applications which fail at handling such a high resolution, you could switch to 1600x900 instead which is high still, and because it splits is an exact 2:1 ratio with the original resolution, it will look just as clear as 3200x1800. If the bios allows to install linux, you could also try linux on this and it would run very smooth with the skylake CPU. I have to find out how many hours the battery lasts still. But don't buy anything before you find enough reviews on this HP chrombook. Maybe it has some secret issues i could not possibly guess. From the hardware specs and display specs, this is THE chrombook. Better than anything else i have seen. You could get it with a slightly faster skylake CPU but i doubt it would justify the extra cost, plus faster means more heat. This CPU is more than fast enough for what you need it for and generates little heat/draws less power. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 73682091 Greece 12/28/2016 12:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | [link to www.techradar.com] battery life is around 8 hours while playing some game in a loop, according to the review, which is damn good still, but not top of its class. The screen consumes quite some battery compared to lower res screens. The other drawback is, that this is no touchscreen. So if your toshiba had a touchscreen and you got used to it, then look somewhere else. To me, this would be my favourite still, but i have no clue how important a touchscreen would be for chromeOS to be honest. |

Put an SSD in there instead of a physical disk and you'll be happier. ```````````````` ````__/\__`````` ~~~\____/~~~~ .~~..~~~....~~~ ~..~~~....~~~~ Thoughts do not come from you nor God; you do not create thoughts; you are not your thoughts; every thought is a lie. - 2 Corinthians 10:5 - [link to www.biblegateway.com (secure)] |
