John Glenn, the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth and a former U.S. senator, has died. He was 95.

Glenn was the third U.S. astronaut in space, and became an American hero when he became the first to get into orbit back in 1962.

He went on to circle Earth three times.

John Glenn was one of the "Mercury 7" group of military test pilots selected in 1959 by NASA

Glenn also flew the Friendship 7 mission and became the first American to orbit the Earth

While still a sitting senator, he became the oldest person to fly in space aged 77.
Today it's 6616 days since that happened.

Ed Harris played John Glenn in the film The Right Stuff. Ed Harris is 66 years 11 days old today.

A Freemason, Glenn was a member of Concord Lodge in Ohio, DeMolay International, and the Masonic youth organization.

Glenn's name was used for the character of John Tracy in the 1960s children's TV series Thunderbirds.

Glenn had stated that he saw no contradiction between believing in God and the knowledge that evolution is "a fact", and that he believed evolution should be taught in schools.

John Glenn's patriotism out shined his questionable choice of political parties ...

He was an outspoken opponent of both the MX missile system and the B-2 Spirit projects (and thankfully he fell short in those fights), but he was also very vocal about beefing up the powers of the inspector generals office, and sought to decrease the size of government ... a true fucking rarity for a democrat.

Personally, I'm indebted to the man and his legacy, for his bulldog tenacity in pushing for research and benefits for veterans suffering from MS/ALS/GWI following our first trip to the sandbox.

Not all democrats are drool cup mouth breathers ... and I wish more were like John Glenn.

Its sad that he did not see us landing on Mars.....hell we can't even get back to the moon.....

I absolutely do not agree with his opposition to some of the finest military projects in the history of man, and some of his social policies were straight out of the swamp, but I don't believe he was a bad man, and the democraps have proven they are capable of finding far more dangerous specimens to send to DC.

Strangely enough John Glenn was going to run for president in '68, but had to withdraw because he "hit his head in the bathtub."

The Chinese are able to successfully launch rockets thanks to the Clintons' and Loral. John Glenn covered up for Bill Clinton and never allowed the investigation of both Clintons to move forward. That action cleared the way for that awful woman to become my Senator.

I don't wish him ill as I realize he served our country, but I can not mourn him. My prayers will be for comfort to those who do mourn him...
