Actually it's an office role, as a title like Vice President...or Chief...or Director. It's been changed like underwear for a long time. The last guy had some...issues...hence the role of the office being open and back filled by a temp while a suitable and more permanent replacement can be found.

Let's just say the office requires someone less 'rapey' (there have been complaints, many complaints) and able to manage the workload without taking it out on staff that are more permanent than the people that hold the office. Basically an ugly management shitstorm that's been on going for a while, in this case it's just easier to retire people quietly that are at the end of their tenure than fire them. Regardless of their wishes to stay on, best for them to take the golden handshake and go for a walk.
