I don't agree with that. They were just careless.

All the couples had children there, and the parents dined every night at a restaurant very close to the hotel after putting the kids to bed. Typical... the women questioned it, and the guys convinced them it was okay. (It happened to me many times! I was so much more concerned for my kids' safety than my husband was! I think men just take chances.)

The McCanns were on the first floor of the hotel, which is bad for anyone staying at an apartment or hotel, and admitted they did not check the window to see if it was locked and secure. Besides, they were known to leave their patio door unlocked during the day so they could walk out to the pool. They locked it before leaving for dinner. The window was in question, though. They lowered the storm shutters, and thought it was okay, but never checked the window lock.

The problem, too, is that any hotel employee could have entered through the hotel room door. They all have keys. The restaurant employees knew all these couples had kids and that they dined at the Ocean Club Tapas restaurant every night. The restaurant was a stone's throw to the hotel and those kids' rooms, but it takes one minute to take a kid out the door after one of the parents returned after "checking." Each parent took a turn to "check." The parent only listened for crying outside each door.

I've had my share of contact with pedophiles in childhood. I was a beautiful child, and my parents had joined a cult. My step brother was actually molested, and I've sat through a few molestation court cases (as a witness). Before joining the cult, my parents were in musical theatre. They were very neglectful, and I was basically on my own. How I knew to defend myself (by running, hiding, not getting cornered), is beyond me. I credit my aunt in part as she was close to my age, and I was able to learn from her. I guess I still have that suspicious nature - I was also sarcastic and willful. Children need to be taught early about child preditors and what to do. I wonder if kiddie porn is making this problem worst?. I know 3 men in prison right now for pedophilia. They were the last you would have expected. Two were teachers, one a psychiatrist. (I was a child in the late 70's. - lots changed since then). Keep your kids and grandkids safe people! TELL THEM about molesters!

You'd be surprised. I've read that it was/is very common, especially at resorts. They put the kids to bed, then go out. The McCanns and the other couples took turns and checked on the kids every 1/2 hour by listening at the door for crying.
