The school officials probably are uncomfortable and unhappy that not enough students would have shown up wearing costumes of jihadist warriors or adult women covered with chadors.

Liberals are kind and caring, after all.

Let me break it down for you geniuses since you've all apparently "overthought" it. The school is afraid sex offenders will show up in costumes to the Halloween festivities. While sad they had to do this, it's a good decision.

Re: Connecticut school cancels Halloween, due to feelings of exclusion.
Last year I overheard four old hipster babyboomers in a coffee shop discussing how to encourage more parents to bring their kids trick or treating to the mall and other businesses instead of staying in their local neighbourhoods... as requested by the business owners. They were obviously well off members of the local business board and nobody in my area had a single kid.

Each oblivious that they were actively ruining the bonds of their community. The baby boomer generation is just shit.

Re: Connecticut school cancels Halloween, due to feelings of exclusion.
This happened in our district a couple years ago. There was a big outcry, parents speaking at school board meetings, etc. The costume parades were an established tradition in the community, parents would take an hour off from work just to watch.. they remember doing it when they were kids going to the same schools.

The main excuse given for banning costumes was that since we're a Title 1 district with lots of kids in housing projects, homeless, transient, etc. who could not afford costumes, it wasn't FAIR.

A group of us banded together and got independent donors, local companies, etc. to agree to buy/provide a "library" of costumes any kids could borrow for the day hence alleviating the problem for the kids who could not afford them. Classic "objection handling" tactics from Sales 101. Problem solved, right?

Nope, the flaming liberal idiots still outlawed it citing other nonsensical reasons. Then they wonder why all the parents who used to donate goods, time, materials, etc. have stopped being involved in the schools. Maybe that was their goal, if so, then mission accomplished.

So they're worried about the adults attending who wear costumes? When my daughter was in elementary school, the parents didn't dress up, just the kids. They should have sent out notices that only the kids are allowed to dress up.

Will the poor kids be allowed to trick or treat?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18265195

Probably not.

How will they be able to ensure every single child gets the exact same number of candies?

I would send my kids to schools in costumes and tell the school they are pagans whose religious beliefs must be respected or I would sue the school.

Since Halloween is a religious celebration it would be better to get all religious customs/celebrations out of government schools. People should observe them on their own time.

Halloween is NOT a religious holiday. It was born a harvest time tradition if you feel the need to go back a thousand years, and has been peppered with this and that throughout time, but it has become an American "spooky consumer" holiday.

For many it is still a religious holiday.

Re: Connecticut school cancels Halloween, due to feelings of exclusion.
They banned Halloween a long time ago in the school system here. It's called a "Fall Party" and you can't bring treats because of all the "allergies". So my kids bring home a million pencils and plastic garbage. And probably can't say Halloween at school.

Also, they are slowly trying to make Halloween extinct overall. I work in retail and notice the decline every year with Halloween merchandise and specialty stores. It's mainly just candy now. And the same décor and costumes from last previous years.

I think I'm keeping my kids home from school on Halloween so we can celebrate properly.

Same here, I hate the stupid stuff they bring home. It cheap plastic spider rings and pincers and tattoos. It sucks and it all goes in the trash. U can't send any snacks to school either.
