me thinks the 'flat Earth' feelings that some have are the realization that the whole of perspective is an illusion, i.e., flat.

If the universe can be seen as flat (according to cosmologists) why not physical reality?

I don't have time to list anything specific but pharmaceutical drugs in the past 20 years have led to more mass shootings than ever
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73104116

Mass shootings seem to be less, actually. For example, looking at charts like these that show it's at about the same level: [link to publicradio1.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com]

and considering that the US population in 2016 is 150% greater than in 1975 (214 million), it seems like a substantial decrease in mass shootings overall.

Casualties may have gone up, however, due to easier access to greater firepower and more people being concentrated in one area.

It would also be interesting to look at suicides and psychoses in the population as a whole in relation to dramatically increased pharmaceutical use.
 Quoting: Chaon

Exactly. And also most shootings done by mental patients take place because they AREN'T taking their meds.

One of my theories is that society as a whole is becoming more irrational and chaotic as we make our approach towards greater equilibrium.

What are some examples you have of society going about things completely differently (in a crazy or irrational way) than 20 years ago?

Here's my example:

1998: Bill Clinton impeached for lying to Congress about his own 'congress' with his intern, as well as obstruction of justice.

The world was appalled to hear details of the sordid affair, as well as details of his sexual assaults and other sexual encounters.

He left the White House in disgrace. Publicly known corruption level: Moderate

On the social plane, a man hugging a woman (e.g., a co-worker) or a teacher hugging a student, or students hugging each other were non-issues.

Today: The same impeached President has a very real chance of getting back into the White House through his wife, the former First Lady, who has also lied to both Congress and the FBI on multiple occasions, recently (and is getting away with it). Further, even though there is a very real chance she will be impeached the first year in office (a long and expensive process), the candidacy is still seen as most viable.

Publicly known corruption level: Off the charts

On the social plane, mere words like "hello" can be equated to actual sexual harassment, even rape. However, the same kinds of people who cry "rape" over normal social behaviour have no problem ignoring and defending actual rape and sexual assault by others.

To what seems like many millions of people, actually raping and sexually harassing someone is not as bad as flirting or being friendly with that person. (However, if the people doing it is one of their own, all of this behaviour is ignored.)

My, my. How we've much changed as a people in less than 20 years.
 Quoting: Chaon

By the time FDR was elected there was widespread civil unrest...in fact TPTB thought the country was sliding into Marxism which is why FDR started the programs like social security, etc. In the depression the people were dying of hunger and kids were being sold by impoverished parents. It was hell. The thing would have been worse except that most people lived in small towns or farms and could have gardens to eat from, and families lived together when kids were adults and shared earnings. But today it would be total hell if the bottom fell out; no one lives on farms and little towns; everyone crowds into cities.

things have been far worse in the USA; although things don't look too good now. If we had a depression like the one in the twenties the country would be in far worse shape.

The people of the US have been muffled and silenced; we don't have the least idea of what is going on unless we live around it. The media is NOT our friend as it is owned by the Oligarchs.

IF there was a revolution in Washington DC and they burned the damn thing down, we would never know it because the media would lie and say everything is fine. We should know this by now; our media is as corrupt and censored as Pravda ever was.

It's normal for humans to be brutal, violent, deceptive, duplicitous, conniving, greedy, territorial, murderous, ignorant, irrational, superstitious, tribal and mean.

Since World War II, America to a greater degree and the rest of the world to a lesser degree has known a hiatus to the norm because of equilibrium, prosperity and peace in general.

As that prosperity fades away, we are returning to normal. Globalism is losing to nationalism again. Nationalism in some countries has obviously lost to tribalism.

I suppose the important question is, "What is the general direction of society as a whole today?

The changes going on today are not only economic but social, political, and effect the very threads on which we build our reality.

During the Great Depression, unemployment in the U.S. is said to have risen to 25% and in some countries rose as high as 33%.

Today, out of a population of some 204 million working age adults (15-64), approximately 90 million are out of the workforce. Of course, you have disabled persons, students, etc., but the percentage still seems to be staggering.

The real unemployment rate (U6) seems not to reflect this reality, nor does it reflect underemployment and not being able to meet basic needs.

Instead of a person in 1929 being homeless because they cannot find a job, I think the same person today would be more inclined to steal and commit crimes in order not to be homeless. The thinking is different, I assume.

The net’s dramatic growth continues with NSF lifting any restrictions on commercial use. Interchanges form with popular providers such as UUNET and PSInet. Congress passes the Gore Bill to create the National Research and Education Network, or NREN initiative. In another sign of popularity, privacy becomes an ‘issue,’ with proposed solutions such as PGP (Pretty Good Privacy).

The NSFNET backbone upgrades to T3, or 44 Mbps. Total traffic exceeds 1 trillion bytes, or 10 billion packets per month! Over 100 countries are now connected with over 600,000 hosts and nearly 5,000 separate networks.

WAIS’s and Gophers help meet the challenge of searching for information throughout this exploding infrastructure of computers.

But if they do have such control and influence, it is likely that nobody really knows who they are. (i.e., this powerful person is a proxy for that person, who is a proxy for someone else, etc.)
