I speculate that she may have myasthenia gravis. It can be controlled with medication but patients can have a "crisis" when ill.

They may have increased respiratory infections and choking episodes due to poor control of the swallowing mechanisms.......hence the pneumonia.

Most Myasthenia Crisis episodes are triggered by infection, especially pneumonia.

The condition can result in disconjugate gaze (crossed eyes, etc) and overall fatigue and muscular weakness (difficulty climbing steps and getting into and out of vehicles).

Of course it could also be due to a host of other issues.
