Re: Non-native invasive weed killing horses in Florida. Concerns for Ga, Al, La and Tx
This is what creeping indigo poisoning looks like. It kills all animals and wildlife, not just horses. I've tried to tell friends and family and I have been treated as over reactive. Unfortunately I have seen it at many of your places, at shopping centers, parks ect. It spreads easily by vehicles and you will find it near driveways first but beware, it is fast spreading and hard to kill. It grows all year long and has no dormant period. It also hides underneath the beautiful green grass unbeknownst even on well maintained properties. This is a serious concern to all of Florida agriculture, wildlife and UF scientists. Please familiarize yourself with this deadly non-native plant. I will post pictures of creeping indigo.

Thank you so much for posting this.

Being on the West Coast, I've not heard of or seen it yet. It's good to know. I'll keep these in mind while looking for other nasty weeds. Those flowers just look like little Snapdragons.

Out here, we have those damn Oleander bushes everywhere. They are all up and down the freeways - all over the place. Who in their right mind ever thought that would be a good idea? Idiots!

You are welcome! Southern California would be a good host for this weed. Keep your eyes peeled. It is very scary here in florida. It's EVERYWHERE and spreads by tires easily.

Creeping indigo is a real issue. It is a plant that affects horses and donkeys and all such animals,” Ferrell said. “But it is one of the many toxic plants and some of these other plants we'll see more often.”

Ferrell said it is uncertain what causes the plant to grow more vigorously one season over another and only recently has it received more attention, especially from concerned horse owners,

There is no single solution to keeping the weed under control and therefore out of the horse's diet, Ferrell said. Rather, it takes a multi-pronged approach.

• First identify the weed.

• Apply a herbicide shown to be effective against the weed, such as GrazonNext, Banzel or 2,4-D.

• Rotate the horse from pasture to pasture to allow grass to grow back and not give the weed space to grow.

• Consider re-seeding grass or adding fertilizer to ensure grass is plentiful.

• Routinely check your pasture for the weed.

Other states need to keep an eye out for this dangerous plant. Apparently it easily spreads and seeds/spores can be transported on vehicles tires to other areas.

Hi Ralph! It is a seriously hard weed to control requiring constant vigilance and treatment. Seems like no matter what you do it regrows. Never turn your back and think you've killed it.Thank you for your posthf

Just because you or neighbors don't have horses, this should not be ignored.

This plant is poisonous to ALL animals. If it kills or seriously harms horses, your much smaller dogs and cats are goners!

Many dogs like to nibble on a variety of plants so have a look around your yard and places where your pets might encounter this deadly noxious weed.

If you think you have this growing near you, call your state agricultural department. They will want to positively identify it and can advise you on how to preserve specimens to mail to them.

If there is an agriculture dept agent office near you, they might come out to investigate and help you control it.

This article has some serious info! I don't have horses (but love them) and have some suspicious looking patches of weeds near my dog run. The article mentions it often grows in fields of bahiagrass--- which started coming up this year in my yard.

Yes, it is and so are adjoining Gulf states. I'm in north east Texas, away from the coast. As I mentioned in previous post, I think I might have some of that stuff in my yard. There no blooms on it but maybe it doesn't bloom all the time?

If I had not seen this thread I would not have even thought about it possibly being in my area. In my yard. Right next to my dog run.

Going to have some neighbors come over this afternoon and look at this. Giving them links for information on creeping indigo.

They have a donkey and a couple of goats and really need to know about it.

Also making a poster to put up at local animal shelter as well as calling a few vets so they can put up notices on their bulletin boards, if this stuff really has spread to this area. I'm sure they know about it but I haven't ever seen any written notices in their offices.

Thanks for posting the link. I grew up in Ocala, and have friends there. I will pass this on. This is a serious threat to animal owners for sure
