I don't believe in equality.
I don't believe in equality.

I know, I know, in today's society those words are right up there with "Seig Heil!". But it's true. Every day, we're bombarded with this word. It's in our feeds and on our message forums. I believe everyone has it wrong.

Benjamin Franklin once said: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." I believe "equality" can easily be exchanged for "safety" in that quote. I know it's difficult to wrap your head around, but I'm willing to bet you agree with me and just don't realize it.

A society that chases equality will eat its own tail in the pursuit. However, a society that chases liberty will achieve a closer state of equality for each individual than through any other system yet devised. I don't think most people want a society of equality, either. I'm certain I'm not alone in this if everyone would really think about it. Equality can only be achieved by taking from one and giving to another or by limiting everyone's opportunity.

Follow equality through in thought with me. As of tomorrow, no matter what your occupation or how many hours you invest into your employment, everyone makes minimum wage. No overtime. Or everyone works for the same $20,000 a year in salary. There's a cap on everyone. That's equality, right? Exactly. (Muh Socialism)

I, and I'm sure you dear reader, want to see individual impartiality of opportunity rather than equality. Where every and any individual can enter a free market and work the labor they see fit at the highest wage they can personally negotiate. I believe that individual impartiality of opportunity is what people really think of when they hear or say "equality".

That's liberty. Let it ring, damn you! :D

I usually read of the women's suffrage movement described as women seeking equality to men by feminists. This is inaccurate at best. It had nothing to do with equality but rather the individual liberty to have a say in who represented their interests in the day to day legislation that effected their lives. Individual liberty, not equality.

I often hear the civil rights movement referred to as an equality movement. I'm here to tell you that's incorrect. There were not protests and demonstrations over Jim Crow Laws for equality. It was because so called blacks were being treated unjustly. There really is a large distinction between the former and the latter.

Dr Martin Luther King Jr ended his legendary "Let It Ring" speech with the following words, "And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! Free at last! Thank God almighty, we're free at last!"

Free at last, free at last. Not "equal at last". Freedom. Liberty. The liberty to pursue your own path to happiness. Just like everyone else.

Now that's beautiful.

Dear disaffected Democrats: Welcome to the Libertarian Party, we think you will find our social tolerance delightful. However in exchange for this, you're going to have to find a way to be ok with people keeping their guns and more of their money.

Dear disaffected Republicans: Welcome to the Libertarian Party, we think you will find our small government economic policies to your liking. However in exchange you will have to find a way to be ok with "the gays" getting married.

Re: I don't believe in equality.
You are correct.

More freedom and liberty is the answer to most of the woes facing our society...not less freedom.

Most people hear the buzz phrase 'equality" and feel it is an honorable notion.

As you pointed out...to make everyone equal...some must be pushed down and held back. That is not equality or freedom for them, that is oppression.

Indeed. A group does not become more free by taking away the freedom of others. In the end, both sides lose.

True, which is also the reason our founders set us up as a Constitutional based Federal republic and not a true democracy as they knew this truth. hf

A handsome piece of writing sir and right to the heart of the matter. Of course they try to make us chase things that are not only bad for us but also impossible in reality to achieve. We lose the importance of other words and their true meanings as you have so eloquently pointed out.

Thank you for the compliment.

There's equality in North Korea. Everyone is treated equally bad.

Well, even equality of opportunity is not necessarily a good thing. All slaves (white ones, black ones, brown ones whatever) had equality of opportunity to one another. There's equality of opportunity in North Korea ... the opportunity to achieve fuckall.

Being equally oppressed is equality.
