Suggestions on dealing with my boss
Im at my wits end. I figured Ill ask the good ol GLP peeps for some honest opinions.
Not gonna give many details but here is the situation.
I basically run a shop with one other person.
The owner/boss is rarely in, and when he is there, its only to either collect money for deposit, or lock himself in his office. Which is fine I guess...he is the owner. However, he often will start things with a customer....be misleading about lead times ..get the money and then just seem to forget about it. This occasionally causes pissed off people (I usually catch these and follow thru and take care of them) and sometimes they want to speak with who they originally dealt with.
Or...there are financial things only he can deal with.
When I approach him and inform him of these things that require his attention, I usually hear "I dont have time" or " im too busy...I dont need this stress" and either leaves or locks himself away.
Will not talk to any customers or address issues.
I/we are tired of these shady, unprofessional practices. Thing is...my family and I moved to this state for my job and feel somewhat stuck.
What would you suggest for dealing with this boss?
I want this place/job to succeed, but need the owner to do his part (which isnt much).
Thoughts?

If he needs someone to handle all that extra stress he created, offer to take on more responsibility for a higher wage or walk because you're being made to deal with it anyway.

The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Green

The 48 Laws of Power

1. Never Outshine the Master

Envy is a strong emotion that may turn not only your masters but also your closest friends or colleagues against you. Ensure that you don’t shine so bright that your boss and peers have to hide in the shadows, because they will sneak up on you and strike you where it hurts most, for the mere sake of protecting their ego.

2. Never put too Much Trust in Friends, Learn how to use Enemies

Remember the words of one of the brightest Modern Machiavellians, Benito Mussolini. The Duce’s credo was:

It is good to trust people, but not doing so is much better.

If you decide to turn an enemy into a friend, pay meticulous attention for an enemy turned friend might be an enemy still.

3. Conceal your Intentions

Put on a mask and wear it so long that the mask melds into your face and you become one. Under no circumstance must you let people peek behind your mask, be it friend or foe. Conceal your Intentions but subtely reveal fake Intentions for the sole purpose of pointing them into a dead-end.

4. Always Say Less than Necessary

The more one speaks, the higher the chance that the Prince violated Law #3 and unveils his intentions. Silence has a powerful effect when used in the right situation. Make silence your ally, not your foe and one thing you must not forget: You don’t learn anything new by talking. Use talk to lull your victim into false security and squeeze information out of him; otherwise say no more than you have to.

You should go to him and tell him you have some insight and ideas to help his business run smoother, and ask if he is open to hearing your thoughts.

If so.. Get that man a day planner. lol

Tell him exactly what you told us. He needs better time management himself, and his business will follow.

Re: Suggestions on dealing with my boss
What is your title? Offer to take on more responsibility for a new title and more money or perks. This has the potential to be a win/win situation.

Give it some thought and have a real strategy in mind. Make it so appealing to him that he can't turn it down. He can be owner/CEO/president and you can be VP or director of operations etc. maybe create a few more titles for other loyal employees.

Pitch it as a way to boost morale without costing him anything while giving him more free time. See if he will spring for business cards with the new titles you can pass out to customers.

Try to encourage him to spend more time golfing or fishing to boost the customer base. Many salespeople and rainmakers spend most of their time on the golf course.

This is a real opportunity for you.

9. Win through your Actions, Never through Argument

Any momentary triumph you think gained through argument is really a Pyrrhic victory: The resentment and ill will you stir up is stronger and lasts longer than any momentary change of opinion. It is much more powerful to get others to agree with you through your actions, without saying a word. Demonstrate, do not explicate.

19. Know Who You’re Dealing with – Do Not Offend the Wrong Person

There are many different kinds of people in the world, and you can never assume that everyone will react to your strategies in the same way. Deceive or outmaneuver some people and they will spend the rest of their lives seeking revenge. They are wolves in lambs’ clothing. Choose your victims and opponents carefully, then – never offend or deceive the wrong person.

this.

make the workplace situation better for both you and your boss. prove yourself capable of that, and ask for the complimentary raise too, if it is running smooth for a while.

the one thing that stressy people in management positions do not want, is more inane questions and overly complex situations and generally stuff that can be handled by any responsible mature person with enough common sense.

I do. We (other employee and myself)get things caught up, running smooth, then the next thing we know is there is a problem, or an unsatisfied customer due to the boss ignoring or "forgetting to tell us" about a particular issue. By that time...we can hopefully put out another of his fires. If I were the boss, I would have fired him awhile ago.

Sounds like he is a dick
Who wants to own a company
But doesn't want the responsibility or problems that come along with it

I would ask for more $$$ if he gives you the responsibility
Of all the headaches plus your job

If his reaction doesn't make you happy

Start looking for a better place to work

I don't follow that shit. It's good to be aware of it.

I am born again and saved.

1. Joseph in Egypt married the daughter of the high pagan priest in Egypt.

2. When Saul drove David out of Israel, David was forced to live amongst the philistines, and he got along with them and they respected him.

They did not respect Saul.
