Re: What is sleep and why do we need it; more precisely why do we dream?
I can tell you one thing. Dreams are essential to this reality. It starts to fall apart without them.
Many years ago I started smoking pot, I did wake and bake for probably close to 10 years.I hardly ever missed a day.

I didn't dream for all of that time then in January 2012 something broke, I wouldn't call it anxiety, or paranoia, but I had a psychotic break, and I had never had any sort of mental issues in my life. I remember being quite sure that this reality was very frail, everything was sort of like a movie set, just props, nothing felt real.

I didn't know why this was happening to me, but I set the pot down and quit. After a couple weeks the dreams came back, and boy did they come back with a bang, they were horrific nightmares. Things started getting better, but it was like living on an acid trip, I would zone out staring at things and would start to see that they weren't real, it's like things were fluid or I could see through them.

By the summer I was 90% right again, and by the end of the year, I was completely back to normal. But I will never forget that. Ten years of not dreaming, and the fabric the world is made of started falling apart for me.
The outcome is not preordained.

Had a flying dream when I was younger, flew above streams then above the ocean. I had never as much been in a plane at the time. Always wondered how my brain knew that perspective without actual physically observing it.

In my humble opinion based on my own eperience and research, I would say that dreams are more of a playground for our consciousness to go while our brain receives its cosmic download.

So we get instruction from the quantum world in our dreams?
 Quoting: George B

According to me, we are all living in a simulation of sorts. So, the download we receive into our hard drive (brain), is used as a template for us to act and react with our surroundings for an unknown time frame.

Ever met a person who had not slept for like 3 days? The mind cannot handle the lack of the download, and will start playing tricks on the person who dared to miss his scheduled download. They start to hallucinate after missing too many sleep sessions. One commonality is the "shadow people" that people who miss sleep seem to all see.

Well sleep is essential or our brain goes numb, but, our brains are active during sleep. After all, it does control your heart, lungs, movements. The degree to which it is active, idk, sometimes you dream, sometimes you don't or is it simply you don't remember your dream?

As far as dreams go, I think it is a manifestation of your mood, events in your life, troubles, hopes, etc. Why do people have nightmares? Why do people have some dreams that are so unreal and senseless and crazy that if you do remember them you can't make heads or tails out of them? Why do some dreams have people you know in them and some have people you never knew? Why do you fly in dreams? Why do you never "hit bottom"? Lot's of questions, but I really think the answer is unique to each person.

We love to watch our cats dream.
They, like we, are paralyzed,
Thank God, or they would be taking
off like rockets flying around the room.

We can only guess when their little
eyes are rolling around and their little
paws are all shaking back and forth,
that they are chasing birds and mice,
or running from some predator
in their dreams.

Sometimes I dream of people I've never met before in real life. I wonder if those people in the dream really exist somewhere, because they have pretty unique personalities. If they do exist, I wonder if I was in their dream too.

Maybe dreaming is connecting to the spiritual internet.

Re: What is sleep and why do we need it; more precisely why do we dream?
I questioned somethings I had experienced of my own self in regards to speaking.
I consider writing speaking when it is in regards to the experiences.

I have always had a problem with learning in educational sense.
Yet, my siblings and other family members excelled in it.
The deficit of it was not will or desire but an inability to retain information given and to recall it.

I had to go on through out life functioning with out that being fixed or understood.
I had to operate on and in a different format just to operate or interact with my environment and others.

I have heard it said that we should be more careful what we say.
That is particularity ignored by me.
Because I found that through what I said that I did not know, was how I come to learn it.

I observed my own self speaking what I did not understand and it caught my own attention.
I reacted to my own self in that "say what" reaction.

I had to go and look up what I said just to get the understanding of it, even the definition of it.
Because I did not understand it at all.
I did not understand what the words meant and they were in my own language.

I had to question my own self as to where those words came from.
Yet, I also found that it was through this way that I learned the understanding of the content of others spoken words.

The only way I can answer for speaking things that I do not even understand or know, is by dreaming dreams I never knew were dreamt.

After this speaking of such things like that, it would bring me to go and get the understanding, of what that was or meant.

There was no memory of knowing it and no understanding of it.
Being careful of what you say can in some instances keep you from understanding.
By keeping you from going where you never have been before.
The most precious things are the simple things in life, always present in the simplest of minds.

dreams are nothing more then what you see on a day to day basis or what you think about.Watch a zombie movie, odds are you will have a zombie dream same day maybe a couple days later, think of a old friend odds are you will see that friend in a dream. case closed
