i want to thank everyone for their replies. your knowledge and advice has been very helpful!

i also want to ask - what kinds of behavioural things should we be looking for if we are dealing with people who have an addiction issue? are there certain things they may do, or say, that would be red flags? i dont have experience with this kind of thing at all. i suppose we've been very lucky up to this point.

When they keep asking to get into his house.

I just wanted to bring flowers...

I just wanted to wish them well...

Maybe I could clean for them just to help them out...

Any one of those is no big deal, but when a person keeps hounding on it...it's a dead give away! And it's usually a person you would never suspect (child, grandchild, neice, nephew, brother, sister, family friend).

thank you!

now, we did have a worker who was coming to the house that would show up early some days, and she would do little cleaning jobs and stuff, too. but she's been reassigned to other clients for issues regarding my dads care, and her inability to get along with some of the other workers. but the thing with the pill container has continued without her here, so either it wasnt her, or if it was, theres also someone else taking things. another one of our workers comes early from time to time, but she likes to sit and chat with my mom and i. so its not like she's wandering around or anything.

the paranoid conspiracy nut inside me is going mad with this whole incident, though, since im constantly thinking of different things that could be going on. for today anyway, no pills are missing and the pill container is where it should be. but its also very obvious that we've put his meds away somewhere out of sight. so, if the behaviour of anyone changes now that things arent as visible, then there's clearly an issue.

i wanted to update this thread, and ask everyone some more help (you all have been really great so far, so thank you!).

firstly, we have reported the situation to everyone. the people who manage the workers that come to the house, the organization that manages the agency that sends the workers, the police, the pharmacist, and our doctor. the supervisor for the workers came to the house on monday to talk about this whole thing. she was shocked, and said that she's never had this issue before.

the police told us that they cant really investigate at the moment, since we dont have anything pinned down to any one person. we have suspicions of someone, but nothing that could count as evidence.

we had put all the pills away except for what my dad would need in a day. the cops suggested that we leave some pills out, and keep them counted after every visit, so that if/when something goes missing, we can pin it down to the people that were there for the visit they went missing. im concerned that if someone is stealing, they already know we're suspicious because we moved the pills in the first place, and wont risk stealing anything again, especially since the pills were gone for a few days, and now they're back. but at the same time, i think that if someone is an addict, they wont be able to help themselves.

my other concern is about a detail that i fucked up. when i called the police station earlier, i took some notes while i was speaking to the dispatcher. she told me that what i should do was call and ask to speak to an officer in headquarters, and if the call went to voice mail, i should leave a message. and if the message wasnt returned by the evening, to call 911 and they'll send an officer to the house. that was written in a notebook that was sitting on my moms computer desk in the kitchen. totally in view of anyone who walked by. it was something i didnt even think of, and had forgotten all about. and the workers do have to go in the kitchen for things. so now im thinking that the person i suspect saw the note i had written down, because the visit this evening was a lot quicker than it normally is, and that worker was out of the house and driving off a lot sooner than she normally does(she's really friendly and likes to talk to me and my mom). the note said nothing about why we were calling the police. so i was thinking about saying something about having to call the cops again about a disturbance that was going on behind our home(there have been disturbances back there several times in the past). just casually mention it while talking with them. that might be enough to make her think that we werent calling about the medications, and if she thinks we dont suspect anything, she might take more pills which would give us a reason to call the police again and file a report. does that sound like a good idea? or do any of you have any more ideas as to what we could do?

the police also suggested looking into getting a nanny cam. i told them that we had considered it, but we didnt know the legal issues involved with recording someone. and they said that there are no issues - we can record anything we want in our own home. so we're going to look into that. if anyone has any suggestions as to what to buy, where to buy it, where we can get it for the cheapest price (we cant afford anything fancy or expensive) that would be great.

I dont know where in Canada you are, but here in Ontario the pharmacy can dispence the meds in pre-counted "bubble packs", one for each time of day with the correct number and type of pills in them.

I spent most of 2014 looking after my dad while he died of cancer, and those packs were a life-saver. counting pills became one less thing to have to worry about, PLUS dad got quite insastant about some of his meds and was hitting almost double-dose with the bottles, the bubble packs put an end to that.

thats something to look into in the future, for sure. thank you for the suggestion. i think once we've figured out who it is, and they've been dealt with, that would be a good idea. having everything pre-counted and marked would definitely discourage anyone from stealing.

for right now, though, we want someone to take something. we want to be able to find out who's stealing the meds, so that they can be dealt with.

Wish there were some way to help you OP and feel bad you're having to deal with this.

Will try to keep this short. Yrs. ago, a woman ran a stop sign, hit our car, and my injuries were extensive. After one particularly difficult surgery, there was no pain relief except for a half dose in the recovery room with the remainder promised after returning to my room. The remainder never came, nor did the next dose, or the next.

When my sister told a nurse I was in bad shape and needed pain meds, she told her I'd had them but just forgot because I was very drugged. My sister waited for the next shift. Told them. They looked at the chart and said I'd had all of them. My sister told her no, I hadn't because she'd been there all day and not left. The nurse said she must have left because I HAD been given the meds. My sister assured her she used the bathroom once with the door open so she could see who came and went and she had never left the room.

The nurse took my blood pressure and hurried out. Came back with a pain shot.Trying to stay short, a nurse lost her job over it. She was a drug addict and took all my meds and others for herself and altered bp rates, etc. to make it look normal.

Hope this isn't happening to your Dad, but if it is, the person responsible needs to be gone before they are left unsupervised with someone. Good luck to you and your family. The people you save from a potential thief will be ever grateful for your help.

thank you :)

and thats terrible! im glad you had your sister there to look out for you. and im glad im here to look out for my dad. i wonder what happens to the people who dont have anyone to look out for them, and totally rely on the workers and professionals who could be stealing meds.

im hoping that someone takes the bait, and we can catch them. because even though the supervisor has never had an issue like this, that doesnt mean its not happening to someone and not being noticed/reported. if someone is willing to steal from us, they'll steal from someone else. especially if they think they've successfully gotten away with it.

Thank you. Will always be forever grateful for my sister. She's not a "make waves" type person at all, but she certainly was that day and only those who have been in incredible pain will understand the gratitude.

People in that position can't speak for themselves and if they do, they aren't believed. One family sued because they said their loved one died in horrible pain and they had mentioned concerns about him saying he didn't get the meds.

If I were you, I'd try to find a safe over the counter drug that looks like the meds that have come up missing. Something you could use to replace the narcotics that wouldn't harm your Dad if he took them if you have any hint that maybe he's taking them himself.

If it's him, he'd likely tell you his pills aren't working anymore....or something. If the pills are missing, and he's not complaining, you'll know where to go from there. Many in the healing profession are angels. Family and friends who care sometimes have to become angels to watch over those who aren't the angels they try to appear. Good luck to you. It's a hard road to travel.

its definitely not my dad. im totally certain of that. its someone who has been coming to the house since he got home from his time in the hospital.

i wish i could find something similar to what he's taking to put in a bottle and see if they get stolen - thats a good idea. i just dont know how to go about doing that.
