Anonymous Coward User ID: 72870552 United Kingdom 08/29/2016 06:42 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There's a lot of people with a lot of money pissed off with how things are going at the moment - Namely the EU, Brexit as well as an American presidential candidate breaking what has been the political norm for the past 50 years in America by actually speaking his fucking mind. You know, common sense type material instead of promising the world and delivering jack shit. Well the people who are pissed off want to make things hard so to counter the shit they watch us all. It's something like that, like, there must be a serious shit storm going on behind the scenes daily that we don't see about for sure. Necessary evil really. |

And no, SS is not requiring a text to log in. It's an option but email is also an option. So they have had 6 years to refine the loopholes. And it's about 6 years since I notified that I would no longer receive a statement in the mail saying what my qualifications and amount of benefits would be at retirement age. That would be next year for me. I don't do anything financial online or by phone. So I called and they said they would send me a security code by mail to be used within a specific amount of time. But.. I would still have to have an ssa online account. BS So, my only other option is to drive 90 minutes to the closest ssa office. Bottom line.. People who have worked and paid into the system for over 40yrs are screwed by the system unless you are willing to play the game. . Anonymous Coward User ID: 85165933 United States 01/28/2023 04:47 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | A lot of online stuff requires phone text message authentication now. Amazon requires this every time I sign in. Some go further and their app must be able to read your GPS location (i.e. my bank). Without access to my location I have to call them to sign in. But no need to get upset about all this. It's not mandatory that you must shop with Amazon, or bank online, or collect social security. You can completely opt out of society if you want to and go live off grid in some huge dense forest somewhere anytime. Your phone number is basically your new social security number now. It's also your personal tracking number. Wait until you move somewhere that your existing cellular provider doesn't have coverage for and you discover you're locked out of everything, lol. I had to set up a new Amazon account with my new phone number because I wasn't getting signin authentication texts at my previous phone number because the phone showed no service all the time. Worse, you can't change your old phone number until you signin using your old phone number which no longer works, lol. Idiot fucking new generation of dumbass programmers. Beware. |

It's limited what is shown on the SSA website. I receive paper mail. They don't requiring you to use the account and everything should be sent by mail, if you choose. I think if you don't have an account they default to paper mail anyway I suppose by now you've made an account, correct? The online account honestly isn't a security risk. It's pretty easy. You made an account here, so it shouldn't be a problem. |

I don't text(by choice), and the nearest SS office is 50 miles from me. I don't receive SS yet, but maybe I'd like to check on it without driving 100 miles round trip. Quoting: last one GOVERNMENT AGENCIES LIKE SOCIAL SECURITY CONTACT YOU ONLY VIA U.S. MAIL. Don't buy into this SS scam. It's like the IRS calling you and telling you that you owe them money. This one wants all your SS info to rob your account. Again, government agencies contact people via U.S. MAIL. agree they only contact, by us postal mail. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85165933 With Amazon you can turn off the 2 step verification. And if you choose to use it, you could use an authenticator app on your phone. I held out on these apps for years but I tried it and it's so simple. Again, you don't need to use a phone number for Amazon, or anything, to log on except a name and password. You can turn that off for google\gmail and use just a password. The same for most everywhere. Heck, my bank doesn't even require it to log on. The only place I know that requires it, for me, is paypal 2 step verification is off by default on every service I've signed up for. You have to turn it on yourself. Except paypal |

There isn't much you can do online anyway, i guess. i think you can change your bank direct deposit account and update some addy and phone number. You can always call, which is a pain now, for other stuff. The hold on the phone is ridiculously long with bad connections, disconnects, and idiot employees. It's impossible they don't have funding for good telephone connections. I think a lot of employees are working from home still. |

Quoting: Room222 People who have worked and paid into the system for over 40yrs are screwed by the system unless you are willing to play the game. . You played the game for 40 years to earn that entitlement. Now you complain? I've been shortchanged by a pension I earned back in the 80s and 90s when I worked at Northwest Airlines for 15 years. I should have been entitled to $1700 a month now but I'm only getting half of that (NWA under-funded the pension accounts but I'm collecting the $850 from Delta now instead). And, I'm getting $2150 a month from social security now too. That all comes to $3k a month less Medicare and advantage plan cost. In any case, I never really expected either of these would have still be around by now. I actually retired in 2015 but turned 65 last year and started collecting on that pension and SS. Been living on savings/investments for the previous 7 years. Now at least I won't be depleting that much anymore. Brought that down by 20% these previous 7 years. I would have kept working but sold the business in 2015 when it became too difficult to find quality reliable employees with at least half of a brain anymore (when did they stop teaching math in schools anyhow)? I'm just glad I'm retired and all is well .. so far ... knock on wood. Even this COVID bullshit ordeal has caused me very little trouble. The worst of it was having to wear a mask to buy groceries when that was mandatory. Oh, and campgrounds were closed for a year which interfered with my summer fun. Anyhow .. even though I applied for SS online, I still had to drive to a SS office an hour away to show them a copy of my birth certificate and divorce papers. And I also had to mail copy of divorce papers to apply for my pension (had to show ex wasn't entitled to any of it .. damn glad i had the lawyer put that in there back in the 80s). I am damn glad I kept good records of everything all these years. They will ask for a lot of information when you apply for SS. Dates of military service, dates of marriage, copies of birth certificate and divorce papers, dates of employment history, more. I had everything in a file cabinet to answer every fucking question and to provide required copies of things! I was so relieved once I finished all that. They don't make it easy. In fact, I got the impression they wanted me to just give up, lol. |

Then they saw the other thread and deemed it merited further discussion. If not a bottom-of-page suggestion, they might have simply searched "doom clock" or something. Quoting: thetrickybigguy just sayin.. It's on the SSA's website. [link to www.ssa.gov (secure)] You can continue to live in your fantasy world, I guess, if it makes you feel superior. Just sayin'... It says......... On June 10, 2017, we implemented a second method to check the identification of my Social Security account holders when they register or sign in. This is in addition to the first layer of security, which is a username and password. Users can choose either their cell phone or email address as a second identification method. Two forms of identification when signing in will help better protect accounts from unauthorized use and potential identity fraud. Now, each time a user signs in to their account, they will complete two steps: Step 1: Enter your username and password. Step 2: Enter the security code we send by text message or email, depending on their choice (cell phone provider text message and data rates may apply). If a user does not have a text-enabled cell phone, or does not wish to provide their cell phone number, they will need to use their email address as a second identification method instead. Since an email address is required to use my Social Security, everyone can continue to benefit from the features my Social Security provides. To ensure you receive the email with the one-time security code timely and it does not go into your spam or junk folder, you can add [email protected] to your contact list. Dated 2017 and you can still access by pc using your email. Read people, READ! |
