(Modern Esoteric) A statement was made in a book I'm reading that I'm curious to have other people's thoughts on: The world population reached 3 billion in 1959, with the expected population in 2050 to reach 9 billion. To place the human growth trajectory in perspective, in 1957 it took 33 years for the entire world population to double, in the next 28 years it doubled again, and will again in the next 24 years. In October, 2011, the worlds population officially hit 7 billion, and this figure would require at least five planets to be sustainable. The world’s population is at more than 1400% of its sustainable level, and that is 14 times higher than its optimum capacity. A bumper sticker states: “The greenest action you can take is don’t breed.” Kindle location 868
Quoting: Modern Esoteric, by Brad OlsonI'm not sure where this author got his data about the "optimum capacity" of earth's population but it made me wonder. What IS the optimum capacity? Are we over populated yet? If not, at one point will we officially be overpopulated? Further, should steps be taken now or in the future to curb population growth? Is war necessary to cull the population? Will "mother earth" just ravage the planet with disease or plague every so often to self correct itself? Thoughts? |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69850002 To clarify then, you believe there never can be a number achieved that is too much because the earth won't allow that? |
