One legend goes; a village on one side of the lake was holding a celebration, those on the other side were invited. Most of the guests from the other side of the lake set off rowing in plenty of time, going around the island as caution dictated.

However, two women who were sisters in law were running late. The one who was rowing decided that to save time, she would go straight through mud island, much to the alarm of her companion. As the boat was inching its way uneasily through the muddy channels, they came to an open patch of clear water and rowed into it.

Although the water was clear, it was swirling and bubbling in an unnatural way. All of a sudden an angry water panther emerged from the depths, whipping the boat with its tails to try and turn it over to get at the women within. The sister in law who had not been rowing carried with her a small cedar oar for ceremonial and decorative purposes. With quick wits, she hacked down on the panthers tail as it whipped over the edge of the boat, chopping the tip off and shouting out, ‘Thunder is striking you!’ As she attacked.

The water panther squealed and ran away through the mud. When the women picked up the portion of tail that lay inside the boat, they found that it was made of pure copper.
